Hey guys, new to the forum and this is my first post, just looking for a bit of advice.
I play micro/low stakes online and for the most part, I do fairly well. My bankroll is either breaking even or increasing, not often do I drop below a comfortable bankroll for the stakes I play. By my reckoning, I'm doing well playing online.
I play TAG and do well against the LAG variety. Playing online isn't my issue though.
I've just finished playing my second home tournament and finished fifth out of seven. I knew that five of the other six players were loose/passive and loose/aggressive so decided to play tight and aggressive when I was holding a strong hand. This absolutely did not work for me. e.g. I'm on the button and every single player has limped. I'm holding AKs so decide that a big raise was in order. (We're all still deep stacked at this point). I raised 6xBB +1BB for every limper. Everyone called except the other tight player. At this point, I needed my AK to hit the flop hard. It didn't. The flop came 5,8,2 rainbow. The chances that five limpers hit this flop were ridiculous. UTG donked a 1/2 pot bet. CO raised. I fold. Everyone else called. At this point, I knew my hand was dead.
This happened for every strong starting hand I had including AA-TT and AK-AT. No amount of raising, re-raising or check-raising would get these people off of their cards. I checked, they checked. I bet, they call. Eventually I was getting sucked out on with draws on almost every hand I played, whether I checked down to the river or even if I bet it.
I noticed most of these players were limping with huge hands as well as terrible hands. The occasional raise and 3bet here and there.
These players knew I was TAG so I decided to try and take advantage of my image and loosen up for a few orbits. Also didn't work. No matter my holding, these players would not fold. (Except one time when I was short stacked with KQs and I shoved, everyone folded). Also worth noting, one player on the table said, "Poker is a game of luck, that's why I play every hand". This player was the chip leader for the most part which I found quite annoying.
How do I beat these players? We play for money and will do in the future but I really hate being sucked out on like this.
Sorry fornthe long post and I apologise if this is in the wrong section of the forum. Any answers and/or follow up questions are appreciated!
