Got into a discussion last night RE suited cards in a live game.

I had pockets 10's and the other guy had AQ suited, was my hand favourite pre flop? I thought it was as I'd already hit my pair preflop and he needed to hit in order to win, it's pretty much a coin toss scenario though isn't it??

Many times the over cards will hit to bust out a lower pocket pair reguardless if they are suited connectors or not. Many players bet or call on the over cards even on a low flop--depending on the number of players in a hand-or the tightness of a player.

Pocket 10s are favored 54% to the AQs's 46% chance to win, so yea, pretty close to even.

I've found myself playing low suited-connectors less and less, and almost never in early position or when faced with a raise. The higher suited connectors are great, but I'm not sure if I'm a big fan of suited KQ in early position. I've been busted with that before, and suited QJ in early position is a definite no-no when faced with a pre-flop raise. Of course, all of this depends on the game flow and style of players, but the odds aren't that great.

When you say suited connectors I didn't think you meant AQ. I usually think of these as 9J or 8 10 maybe JQ. These hands can be gold if you can see a flop for a reasonable price. I never play these hands in early pos. But if you can limp in a late pos you will get paid semi often.

I dont really like coinflips , especially if i'm really tring to do my best, and that sounds like 1 to me. I would fold if the other guy went all in and you and invested a small bit. I'm learning that what they call pot odds, right?

This is just a classic race scenario. Neither of you in fairness are storming pre flop. The odds of you winning are close to the odds of him winning with AQ so anything can happen. I wouldn't say anybody is favorite pre flop in this. ;)

I love having suited connectors because have a open ended straight with a flush draws because you have some many outs thats my favorite position in a poker hand.
