I got introduced to Poker a couple of months back and since then got addicted to it. I love cash games mostly. I'm trying to come up with a step-by-step plan to become really good poker player. Please post the best plan as per your experience.

- Play online for "Play Money" at Global Poker till I find a strategy that works for me consistently.
- Read Harrington and Jonathan Little's books on Poker; Follow the threads on this forum closely; Read almost every post in "Learning Poker" and "Cash games" forums. Watch youtube videos to learn more
- Deposit money and start playing 2c/4c cash games; If I lose more than 50$ per month then don't play for rest of the month
- As I see consistent winnings then move up.

I think that it is impossible to develop any reasonal strategy playing with "Play Money" because players are playing there different style than with real money.

Sorry for posting again, but I thought I should add. They used to say poker takes minutes to learn but a life time to master. Which basically means unless your like my mother (luckiest person alive). It takes a long time to master a skill. So be prepared for the long haul...

Poker will teach you things, that will be life lessons.
Discipline, patience, self-awareness, dealing with highs and lows etc etc.

But the biggest thing that will help you and your game is introspection.
Get to understand yourself, and understand the various effects that poker has on YOU.

What happens to you when you win ?
What happens to you when you lose ?
What happens to you when you play 12 hours in a row ?
What happens to you when you haven't played 3 days in a row? (over eager = losses)
What happens to your social life ?
How does your body react to either sitting in front of the Computer or sitting at the casino for hours on end ?
Are you able to let go or does it consume you ?
Do you take things personally ?

I used to play 5 or 6 days a week. I can safely say that FOR ME, the pure aggravation of losing far outweighs the good vibes of winning. I hated not to be able to exert more control over outcomes ... ultimately just being a slave to the fall of the cards. I know the maths of the game (I majored in mathematics at university for 3 years). Yet in the short term anything can happen, and it drove me mad.

Poker is the only activity you will ever undertake, where you have such limited control over the outcome.

Very well said sir. I found what you wrote to be very interesting, clever and honest. Don't get me wrong I share one or two things different to you. But that's to be expected, we all view things our own way.

It's awesome hearing some ones views who can think for them selves...

Yea,i don`t think anyone should focus on any one thing too much,,,you have to spread yourself out somewhat i find to have a `full` life,so to speak. If you spend all your time on 1 thing,it gets stale, and you either lose interest in it,get frustrated, bored,,,and perform badly i find. Just my two cents:)

Watch lots of educative videos about poker, mainly that talk of initial hand ranges.

Start playing sit & go 0.25 cent ... 45 / 90players ..
After you hit this field, you can seek coaching to hone your game and start playing MTTs

I agree that in poker you can't have strategy that always works: today you can meet people at the table who play in one style, tomorrow -with another style

I like your approach, including practicing with play money. Nothing matches the experience gained through real money play at your stakes level. But if I had to choose, I'd pick play money over freerolls any day. Most freerolls encourage bad habits, hence the reason players throw the 'Bingo' term around so much. But, most play money players are there to learn, and usually try much harder to play better than most freeroll players. Again, NOT the same as real money, but closer for the price of admission.
