Taking a wild stab in the dark...Well maybe a calculated one lol. I've immeresed myself in the game and I've gotten decent in a short period of time. I will be devoting a lot more time studying the nuances of the game and have implemented new knowledge as fast as I can to get as mush real world experience from the many different perspectives on poker and will continue to do so. However I feel the need to reach out for a couple of question. (I am limited to the American restrictions with online play so please take that into consideration with your answer)

  1. How did YOU start your poker career and are you currently still successful?
  2. Whats a good starting bankroll?
  3. As a decent beginner what stakes do you recommend starting at?
  4. What online poker client do you feel best caters to the comfort zone of a beginner, and will I need to move to others as I grow or it is all just preference?

Feel free to address any aspect of this subject that you deem important that you feel requires attention that I failed to mention. Thanks and good luck to all of us :D :D

(PS Sorry if this topic was posted in the wrong forum area and move immediately if I have.)

if i were to answer this it would be like a story hahaha but i can tell already you are on the right track in that you are asking these kinda of questions. but in a nutshell been playing for over a decade, professionally for over half that. bankroll it depends, when i first started i pretty much spread out my whole stack every set lol (not recommended). what do you play? cash , mtts, sngs?? as a US player I can only imagine that it must be cash since everything else is pretty limited unless you spread out your action on different sites. but for cash you want to play with people on your same level and worse. so there are some sites that are reg heavy and some with a ton of fish. also look for a good rakeback program and bonuses. maybe this answers most, some or none of your questions but if you have more message me directly. i always like to chat with newer players ... its good for the game!

How did YOU start your poker career and are you currently still successful? - started in 2007 or so on ftp and ps and discovered that i'm an sng player. at that time, i was not a good mtt. i always went thru my ups and downs bankroll wise, but eventually became profitable after learning brm. after black friday, took a few years off and joined carbon a few months ago and discovered my sng game is still the same (profitable), but i'm a better mtt player. ever since ~2007, i've always played at the $1-2 sng and $1-2 mtt. just recently, i've started playing $2 sngs and $5 mtts more regularly to get used to the variance. currently i'm a +roi +profit player at the micro stakes...grinder.
Whats a good starting bankroll? - whatever you're comfortable with. some people can manage their brm well so they deposit a small amt to get started and start grinding. others like to freeroll their way to a br and then start grinding in micro stakes.
As a decent beginner what stakes do you recommend starting at? - lowest possible; the "rule" of thumb is 2% of your br. i personally have a much higher br than 2% yet i still play at the lowest level. again, it's what's most comfortable with you while keeping in mind good brm.
What online poker client do you feel best caters to the comfort zone of a beginner, and will I need to move to others as I grow or it is all just preference? that's personal preference

As a decent beginner what stakes do you recommend starting at?

suggest start from NL10 if you are affordable to lose 200 dollars
or
build bankroll from NL2 or NL4 from freeroll.

the reason is from NL2 you may make into some bad habbits like calling with weak hands. but if you build it from freeroll, if you are able to pass that level quickly, it is easy to win something from NL10 and climb ladders

NL10 is beginner level to start from play with at least half of the know how to play players. if you have enough extra money to start up, just start from NL10.

good luck.

For some reason your question conjours memories of the movie Shawshank Redemption where they're all sitting around in the lunch hall and Andy asks what someone is in for "Didn't your know? We're all innocent in here!"

Random? Yes. Fitting? Possibly.

You've started your career in the right place. I've only been playing since January and cardschat had changed me from a total fish to a minnow with some big effing teeth so congratulations on stumbling across a wealth of excellent information and knowledgable players who are more than willing to help where they can.

I would recommend playing 2nl or 5nl to start. I play on poker stars so there are still a lot of regs at those tables so there can be some challenging spots but both are still pretty easy to beat. Even 10nl is pretty easy but I must add a caveat that I've only tried 10nl once recently and did pretty well.

I use Holdem Manager personally but you can try Poker Tracker and Holdem Manager for 30days free to see which one you like.

Bank roll is what you can afford to loose. Just remember at higher stakes you potentially could loose it faster :)

And am I profitable? I'm digging myself out of a hole that I created for myself early on so the answer to that is getting clearer.

Good luck and have fun!

Oh ya I play full ring cash.

Lol. Yea its probably the only job where 'the source' of your income can also take away money you earned while 'doing your job'...

Im gonna be starting fresh as well. Im gonna approach the game on working from
NL2, then so on. I wanna be able to take in the fundamentals of learning and just try to go from there. I been doing alot of research the last few days, and the more i learn, the more fascinating poker is starting to become again. I been playing for a few years now, but i never really understood it as much as i thought i did. One thing i still find hard to do is knowing when to shut it off for the day because I can find myself there still stuck on a win or loss. So finding a balance for the day is a must and manage time... Set minor goals and find a logical reasoning to every action your put in.

If you're a beginner you don't have your own bankroll. good sites where a lot of freerolls and various stocks is a Poker770 and 888poker. Here you can quickly make yourself a bankroll. Good luck.

The reason you should start out part time is that it allows you to focus on learning the game, rather than always being in a situation where you HAVE to win because you won't eat and pay the rent otherwise. Those who play professionally have both the skills and the bankrolls to back them up, and it's not the glamorous and thrilling lifestyle that it appears to be from the outside; being a poker pro is a very difficult way to make a living.

Keep your day job until you know if you have what it takes to make it work. Other than that, all I can say is good luck.

Start with about 20 buyins on the lowest stake.
