Hello all!
Love poker, but cannot play enough live. Where is a good place to start playing freerolls? How do i track my progress? People here seem to have it to a science.
Thank you again, looking forward to any and all replies.
Edit: a little bit curt cause I'm at work haha

Hello and Welcome. If you are in the US your options are going to be limited. having said that, a lot of people seem to think highly of Hero Poker. I don't play there myself, but do play on Carbon, another Merge skin. There are many, many such skins that all share the same player pool and some of the bigger Merge skins is where I would start.

As far as tracking your progess I'd download the trial versions of either Poker Tracker 3 or Hold'em Manager 2. Both offer free trial periods and will give you more stats and report options than you'll ever use. Good Luck.

If you're non-US get PS. Also snap download PT3 or HEM2 for tracking and reviewing play.

Didn't read the freerolls bit lol, jsut meant in terms of overall experience.

If you play live you'll obv have a bit of money to lump on a site so if you have access to PS then it's going to be infinitely better to just deposit..

Not sure what you mean by > tracking your progress? (while playing freerolls?). Pretty much just look at the 'cashier'.

100% 'snap' disagree. Just play for awhile imo. You don't need to bother with either PT3 or HEM when getting started (especially while playin' freerolls).

Yah you're way better off to download Partypoker if you're looking to play in public freerolls. pokerstars is the shyts for freerolls.

There's no really good place for freerolls any more, not open ones at any rate. Those days are long gone. Now, to get any kind of EV in terms of prize pool divided by field size, you usually have to deposit.

And I'm with those who suggest you learn to play some before you look at tracking software. Tools are a lot more useful after you have a clue about what they're supposed to do; this applies beyond poker.

I wouldn't play without a tracker. It's not gonig to hinder you so you may as well use one.

Yeah, I'd start with a tracker, too. Personal choice, I guess, when you are just beginning. I wouldn't do anything too involved with it at first though. Even just use VPIP/PFR and nothing else in your HUD at first--just to get you thinking about such things as a new player and gradually add more when you're ready.

How bout this, screw freerolls and deposit $50 into lock/carbon. If you cant afford a min deposit then you shouldnt be playing poker.

Nothing wrong with starting from freerolls. Nothing wrong with depositiong a small amount, either. If you are just looking to learn the basics of the game either way will work. Just be aware that the play in freeroll tournaments will sometimes not resemble play in actual money tournaments, especially in the first few levels of play.

PJ, you seem to take liberty in that comment. Money is not an issue I assure you. So, if I was not well off, I shouldn't play poker? Now you sound like a bit of an elitist.
Thank you very much for the feedback! I believe I won't use the tracker for now. I've got a good grasp on the game, but I'm a live guy, so it will take some getting used to, being able to focus on a computer screen. I'll work on that first.
I think Poker Hero will be right for me for now; I do in fact live in America so does that mean no to Pokerstars?
EDIT: By the way PJ, I saw some of your other threads about your plays. You seem top notch, and always as defensive and hard headed. At least you are consistent.

And thank you, this makes a lot of sense. I just want this merely as a hobby; I shouldn't be too troubled by random calls haha.

Yes, unfortunately no PokerStars since they were forced to cash-out all US players and refund their money some time ago. It's a pity since the are still generally regarded as the best poker site as far as professionalism, player pool, support, and many other reasons. Hopefully someday they'll be back, but I doubt it will be in the immediate future. You can still play play money games there, but that's all if you are in the US.

After years here, I tend to see that people approach this game from 2 primary directions. Either they approach this from a poker is sport angle, or a gamblers angle. The gamblers want your money, the sportsters want entertainment.

In the end, it seems perseverance prevails and the 2 groups merge into a pool of fairly decent players, each taking ques from the other, and their overall instincts evolve to understand the game at a fairly high level.

Of course there are other initial motivations for getting into the online poker (OLP) game, but mostly it is one or the other of the above groups. SO for instance a gal who gets into the game cuz she want sex from her boyfriend is a sportster.....:eek:;)

And then there are those of us that, after years, still waffle back and forth between the two. For some stretches of time I take the game fairly seriously, then for even longer stretches of time I play purely for entertainment. Everyone's going to have different goals for their game, and as long as you, personally, are getting out of the game what you want, then it's all good.

Ahh; now the men discuss! Very wise. I agree on all accounts; I'm also a flipflop, now that we've used that term, but nowadays I play almost solely for entertainment. Thank you again for the input; i'm sure I will see around this website.

In this and any other active forum, it's not hard to find people who present their perspectives as if there were no other possibilities worth considering. Take what various posters say for what it's worth **to you**, which can vary significantly depending on how similar each person's circumstances and values are to yours.

In which case a great way (IMHO) to get a lot of hands in fast is via ZOOM play money games at stars. For a learning tool it has some very nice feature, mainly it speed. It has drawbacks in that you will not see how a hand plays out once you fold. There is a workaround for that tho (ctrl-fold). It will allow you to refine your opening hands and thus accelerate the experimental learning curve we all experience.

Since you are in it for the entertainment at this point, you can ignore all the naysayers who will caution you against wasting time at play money.
