Ideally, you want hands that can play for both sides of the pot and hopefully scoop.
The best candidates are usually double suited hands with an ace, a high card and two low cards: for example, AsKd2d3s. That gives you two chances to hit a flush for the high side and three low cards with which give you a good shot at making the nut low.

Avoid middle cards like 6789 which look good but are really only playing for 1/2 a pot. It'll end up costing you.

I, too, am trying to get a handle on both this and Omaha Hi. And, yes, I truly suck at both, but I keep on trying.

It also kinda depends which version you're playing. Hands like 2♦ 3♣ 6♥ K♥ aren't so hot playing limit games, but its a decent pot limit hand. Implied odds, and drawing to big two way hands plays a much bigger role with the pot limit version of the game. In the limit version of the game, drawing to just half with the nut low is rarely a mistake. But it will destroy you wicked fast if you draw to half with just the nut low playing PLO8.

Hmm, I understand the idea of wanting a good few lo cards, but from what I see here, is it pretty much necessary to have an Ace? I'm trying to think of hands that are lo that wouldn't win without an ace and it seems like you'd have to be pretty lucky... (and obviously an ace is useful for the hi)

I mainly try to play for the high hand, it is a little more rare for you to have to split on the high side. Too many times have I split on low and actually lost money. Also the low doesn't show up all the time and it cost you a good bit "hoping" that (insert low card here) will drop on the river.
