In addition to pocket pairs and connected cards, you can also open with cards with a gap between them eg K J, Q 10. These openers are not as strong as the other two and you need to use a bit of caution when playing them, as the best you can make out of them are straights, and flushes if they are suited. In early position only play suited cards as low as J 10. Middle position play the high unsuited cards and suited down to 9 8. Late position play much the same as in middle position. How many of these hands you play depends upon your style of pla,y so feel free to experiment

While this is good advice, I find this to be a big trap to beginners. When opening these hands beginners oftentimes will get married to them if they hit top pair only to be beat by a better kicker. In order to be able to play these hands profitably one must have decent skills in accessing hand ranges and being able to fold the dominated hand.
