Last night I received a $100 MasterCardGiftCard as a present to play online poker with. I have been watching my Dad play poker for a few months and have played a bunch myself but only on Pogo and on the kitchen table. My Dad told me if I read two poker books he would give me some money to get started out to play online poker with. I have not finished reading the poker books but was surprised that I found them interesting and it made me want to play even more.

Last night he gave me the GiftCard and said I should join up on Cardschat and that I could start playing online poker. I look at his computer desktop and there are so many different poker names on there that I do not know what one I should play on. Or maybe I should play on more than one of them?
He said it might be a good idea for me to join a few of them and just put a little bit of money on each of them and be sure to play the freerolls for depositing. I still cannot decide which ones to play on but I want to get going on it soon. He suggested that I play on Titan for one of them but what others should I choose?
What ones have the good freerolls for depositing?
If you were just starting what ones would you pick and why?
PLEASE HELP! :(

I forgot to say I do not really care about the raking back thing because he does not thing I will be playing enough games that it would really matter and that I am better off going for the freerolls instead. But I don't know what ones?

I joined one poker site already but I didn't use my card on it yet. The one I picked out first was the WPT poker site because of the big freeroll he told me about on it (OFC).
I think I would like to pick poker stars but I don't think they have the freerolls for depositing there. I was also told the micro players on there are good and I might do better somewhere else. Is this true? Is this your experience?

thank-you:)

depends on a lot.. whether you want to play cash games or tournaments etc, if your bankroll is replenish able or not.. and other stuff but those are the main things imo.

don't know where you're from but if its not the US then I recommend Poker Stars personally.. (I prefer the software there to anywhere else) the players are better in general at the higher levels but at the limits you'll be playing that won't matter.

since your bankroll's so small atm I'd keep it all in one place, makes it easier to keep track of how much you have and you can focus on earning your deposit bonus on one site.

p.s. which books were you told to read?

edit: right, no rb.. got it.

pokerstars have 100k depositor freerolls.. they won't help you improve too much but between those and the play money tournaments you can get some practice in.

For starters, it sounds like you have an awesome dad lol. But, as an American, I can honestly say the answer to your question is easy. If any American player had the option they would be at Poker Stars. No matter what stakes or game preference you might have, you will be able to find it there. I think I speak for ALL AMERICANS when I say that, given the choice, we would all be depositing there. Once you are a CC member for 30 days and have 65+ posts you can join the freeroll club and try out other sites that you may like. Soo...Welcome to CC and good luck with whatever you decide :)

edit: another good option for beginners is Bovada bc the software (HM and PT) that players use which determines how you play, is unusable there. The players are anonymous so they have no tell on your statistics. But like I said, unless you have a major reason not to, Poker Stars is your best option

First of all finish the books you've started. After that as the players above me said it depends if you are an american or not. If you are not from US i would suggest Pokerstars or Titan. If you are from US you do not have too many choices. Play the freerolls untill you understand the simple rulles of poker and at the same time keep learning and ask questions. Do not bother much with large freerolls because they do not worth more than learning some simple rulles.CC freerolls are way better . Than choose the type of game you like and start playing.
Another thing. I suggest you to carrefully go throiugh the entire forum. There are a lot of interesting things that could help you before actually play for your money. Read about bankroll management, about abc poker etc.The money are easy to loose and verry hard to gain. Actually this is most of good players their money. Taking them from ppl that have no ideea what they are doing.

Provided you go to a site where there's enough traffic so you have reasonable numbers of games / tables available, which one you choose is not the most important factor in terms of becoming a winning player, which I assume is your goal. As a beginner, what you're best served to focus on is building a solid foundation for your game, which means tight aggressive (TAG) ABC poker. Also, while it's fine to try different forms of poker to see what you most enjoy, pick one and stick with it for the time being. Focus on learning to win at the one you choose.

In the states (and in the absence of Pokerstars) I play on the Merge Network = Black Chip Poker and Carbon Poker specifically.

Which books are you reading?

Play freerolls but also play the 11 cent and 60 cent games on Merge. These are for the most part bingo games but if you play tights and aggressive you will be winning them all the time. Take a shot at some $1 MTTs if that style is your thing. If you prefer ring games you really should not play anything higher than 2NL until you prove you can win at that level consistently.

Good luck and welcome to CC

For starters, it sounds like you have an awesome poker player for a dad lol.
edit: another good option for beginners is Bovada
My stepdad is PokerOrfirice. He thinks he is good but I will soon be kicking his butt, ha ha ha.
I asked him about Bovada & he said he will disown me if I join "Bodonk"(?)

I finished one of the books now. CollinMoshmann Sit'nGo Strategy.
I am a bit confused with what to start reading on Cardschat. I guess Learning Poker and Tournaments for now will be where I start off.
Also, while it's fine to try different forms of poker to see what you most enjoy, pick one and stick with it for the time being. Focus on learning to win at the one you choose.
I think small buyin tournaments that don't have too many players in them is where I would like to start. And the games with 45 players or maybe 90 players in them (my stepdad said maybe the 27 player Sit'nGo would be good to start on too and NOT Turbo)
DITTO - and if you are not of age - NEVER LET THEM KNOW - EVER
Which books are you reading?
Age part is not relevant. I am 24years old. :girl: But I don't date guys with long hair and goofy hats :D
I am also reading Harrington On Hold'em Vol.1 by Dan Harrington.

My stepdad has lots of books and stuff for me to read but said to just read a bit for now and then play for a bit before I read some more. Have some videos to watch too. I think my head is getting ready to explode already, ha ha ha.
Obviously none of these have read your other thread, LOL

Thanks for the game suggestions. I haven't signed up to Merge but maybe I will some time.

So far I tried signing up on williamhill poker site but I was not able to make a deposit using my GiftCard:( My stepdad said it should work but it didn't.:(
Today I am going to sign up on Pokerstars and hope I get to play a bit. I am so excited about it.:) :)

If I can find a babysitter (hoping my dad is reading this, ha ha ha) I might try to play on Titan Poker site also. PokerOrfirice said it is a no-brainer to sign up to Titan to play the Cards Chat freeroll on there (it is $1,000). And some pretty good $1 tournaments are on there too but the Sit'nGo games are not too good to play in except for maybe the 30 player games some times.

Wish me luck!!!:girl: :)

Before you deposit, if you decide to deposit to a site that does allow rakeback, it would be a HUGE mistake not to get rakeback if you can.

While you don't see it as an advantage now, when you build that BR on that site and start playing more or if you are going to play ring, you WILL kick yourself for not getting rakeback!

Good question because I do not know the answer, ha ha ha. But this is a question I have been asking myself all week.
I was thinking to make it be MadMaddie. My dad keeps trying to tell me a name to pick and says I should not pick a name that is man or woman related or anything that tells the other players something about me.
He wants me to pick SpewlaVie but I think it sounds sorta dumb. Maybe I will tell him that if he gives me ten dollars on Pokerstars then he can help to pick my name on there, ha ha ha.
What name do you think would be a good one to pick?

Play a hundred dollar fifty50

I guess you would have to play on cake/ lock or one of the merge skins. Even if small always sign up for the rakeback. Start off playing the lowest of the low stakes

Well sounds really cool of PO to do this for you...Others have already mentioned it, Pokerstars is the way to go, and here are my reasons for it..

Since you only have $100, then these would be my reasons for choosing Pokerstars for you..

1) You can get into the 100k Free Roll depositors Free Roll.. Mind you the top prize in it is about $300 and there's about 10k players in them, but they do end up going fast+ You'll learn, if possible from those games..

2) Many 90 man Sngs+45 man Sngs, and other smaller table games, that are cheap to still get into..That would allow your B.R to move on up steadily..

3) (Even though PO wont be happy with me suggesting this to you, since he himself can't stand these games)...You could play in the PSO open league, and if you win, you'd get $1500+then you'd move to the next league, which is the PM league, and if you win you'd win 5k, (Sry PO had to put it out there)

4) The CC Buy-in games are held there...$5.50, and usually a nice return, if you end up winning it, Ask PO for more info on this, since he's won it acouple of times.

5) They always have games up and running on PS, not saying they don't have games on other sites, but saying that PS is one of the most recognized sites in the world..

If you need more help Just ask and welcome to CC

Oh about the name thing, curious, personally I think PO is right to advocate to you, that choosing a name that states your gender is a sort of a tell (Sry), when I first started out I just choose my name as my SN which is total lame btw...So I'd say choose something that says something about your game but not about your race/gender/age or anything in that sense...

So like "I'm a total spew", "LagzRus", TotalCardDead", Or anything that catches your fancy in that sense..

Hope I helped somewhat

Good luck! Poker stars has tons of pretty good free rolls (that get you tickets in to nice prize satellite events)
