My first deposit ever was like 1.5 year ago. I deposit $10 but ran out of cash in 1 month (every time going $2 up and $3 down) i wasnt building my bankroll.
2 week ago i wanted to try it again with another $10. And again i was going up and down (more down than up....). I watched some vids and forums and people where telling that is would be good if you had 20 times the buy-in for a cash game sng around 30-40 i think?. so i did another $32. i made $3 with a 2c/5c cash game. I thought this is finaly going good. But then it went down again slowly. I was frustrated but I really want to build my bankroll. I was/am playing for 2-3 hours a day, watched vids reading forums (things the pro's give as a tip)
The last few days am really struggling with should i play SNG or cash game's.
I really dont know what to do now, I hope you guys can give me some tips how i can build a steady bankroll. My biggest problem is (I think) that I slowly lose my money instead of gaining it slowly. Sorry for my bad english i did my best :).
Thanks allot.

If you are slowly losing money, then you are good.

The truth is hard to maintain BR with respect to time.

I would say if you can break even in 2 months time, then youre a winner. You gain points and status. You can use the gain points and you have benefits with regards to status.

Well, pokerstars is probably the toughest poker site there is, so if you're just learning I would suggest you to pick a site with softer games. Also if you feel like you have some leaks in your strategy/game post some stats, trouble hands etc. I'm sure lots of guys here will help you, if you just provide some more information :)

Pick one format either cash or sng not both as each requires a slightly different skill set .Try some 25cent 45 man sng a lot of people have success building rolls with those , use proper br management and move up a level as br permits......hope this helps .....scorp

I think the best is FullTilt (specially for beginners - blinds increases slower and there aren't so much players as in PS). I suggest play MTT's or SnG (6/9 players).

The games that are appropriate for your small BR aren't very hard to beat. If you're not beating them, the most likely causal factor is simply that you don't play well enough to be +EV.

Note that this doesn't mean you don't know enough. You might. Many players have a gap, sometimes quite wide, between their knowledge levels and how much / how well they actually apply what they know.

888 and iPoker Network are both a good start (at least as far as cash games go) :)

For beginners these two networks are best(good offers and soft field) and for bankroll less than $20, play sng and doubleOrNothing. If you think your game is not improving, practice more with play money or freerolls. Gl

Have to agree with you on this one, Fulltilt has the softer field, making easier for beginners. Also, there are lots of "new to the game tournaments" which help you to get better understanding of the game. Author, you should try Fulltilt if you are currently playing on Stars.

Aw. You can build your bankroll or supplement it by trying Fulltilt.

They have daily freerolls. If youre lucky and accumulate something, you can transfer it to your pokerstars account and vise versa.

Sorry to burst your bubble or kill any dream of yours about coming up from $12. Let's stick to reality. Can it be done? Yes. Will you be able to do it? Highly unlikely, but there's always that one outer if you catch my drift.

Sounds like you care too much about the money you're playing with and that makes you play scared. (scared to go broke)

Why don't you play 10, $1 sng's. You don't have to do it all in one day. Do it when you have time, do it when you're well rested and have spent time away from poker in general. If you're a winner, you'll win. If you lose? well what's the worst that can happen? You lose $12. If you're a good player, you'll be back in no time.

Good luck btw!

i do think rake is a big issue.
the percentage of the rake kills most of the players.
I would recommend you try to find a good source of raking back.

Read some articles about your preferred game format. Download a free pokertracker or similar trial; watch your old hands and think about why you and your opponents did what you did. Look at your stats and the stats of winners. Find obvious leaks. Play the cheapest games you can. Personally I would stay away from the double or nothing games; you just do not get enough when you "win" to justify the risk and rake. Playing a regular SNG (if you play SNG games) single or multi-table gives you the opportunity to gain an edge and develop your skills. If you play cash focus on winning small pots and only playing big pots when your hand warrants it. Making small pot poker a key in your cash game (tourney too for that matter) reduces your variance by avoiding tough decisions with marginal hands. Auto top off helps avoid tilt because you are not constantly seeing you loss when you are having a tougher session.

If you are losing you're money, probably you need to learn a little bit more or even take lower stack in your game or play some freerolls and try to win some cash on them while you are learning a little bit more.

IMO i think you should start only playing on the low buy in sit n go or tournament. For example maybe start from the 0.25 cents. The cash table is ok but you got to have more bankroll than that to even considers playing it.

Just because you're losing money doesn't mean that you're a bad player, rather under variance. You should try Poker tracking software, by far it's the best way out there to improve your play. If it helps, I'm under a huge variance swing right now, according to my all-in equity I should be up a couple of buy-ins, but I'm down 30 BI's. That doesn't make me a bad player, of course I do have some leaks in my game, but by no means should you rate a player based on how much money he is making/losing in a short period.

When starting out, you have to focus on one format of Poker. Swinging between SNGs and Cash Games is not good for you. If you go with Cash I recommend you go with 1/2c games.
