The title says it all. I see so many people call other people donkeys. I thought it was someone who went all in on a crap hand and one, until I see it more commonly now, when someone wins with legit cards, just a little confused... Amy

Underdog is right, term is way overused and almost always misused. Often the people being called donkeys are the ones crushing the table. People get stuck playing a certain way and other people identify it. Some people cant lay down hands and need to call someone else out to make themselves feel better. Gus Hansen is often called a donk for playing some different types of starting hands then others. Lots of ways to skin a cat. Some play this backward style very well, but i would imagine it would have a higher success rate live, then online, do to ability to have more reads.

Live action is totally another think and Gus Hansen, as you mention, is a player very capable on reading the other players. Given that he has the luxury of playing a few more hands than the average player.

Anyone who plays a bad move and gets rewarded, I think is suitable for a donk or donkey.

This is the closest to what I define as a donkey. In general, it a stubborn person (like a donkey is stubborn) that refuses to get out of the way, or let you bend their will. If they decide they are going to call you down to the end, there is nothing you can do to get them out of the pot. Occasionally donkeys get rewarded by longshot draws, but for the most part, you should be glad they are calling with the worst of it.

It varies from person to person but it is generally used to describe people who make irrational or poor calls or bets.

  • In Arabicر meaning "donkey", is a derogatory term that refers to someone of very limited intelligence.
  • Because of its connection with ignorance, in modern slang, referring to someone as a dumbass means that they are unintelligent. Many people would find this term vulgar and rude.
  • In contrast, to refer to someone as a jackass in modern slang provides a connotation of being obnoxious, rude, and thoughtless, with or without the added connotation of stupidity. This usage is also considered vulgar. A less vulgar substitute is donkey itself.
  • In football, especially in the United Kingdom, a player who is considered unskilful, and to rely overly on his physical attributes to cover up his technical shortcomings, is often dubbed a "donkey."
  • The term "donkey" in British English is used in horse racing to refer to unsuccessful horses.
  • The donkey has long been a symbol of ignorance. Examples can be found in Aesop's Fables, Apuleius's The Golden Ass (The Metamorphoses of Lucius Apuleius) and Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
  • The term "donkey" is frequently used to refer to unskilled poker players, especially those playing in a predictably loose and unthinking fashion. Compare "patzer" in chess.
  • The unmodified word ass and the adjectival form asinine have entered common use in the English language as terms used to describe a person who is stubborn, foolish, or disagreeable.

A donkey is just one of the many negative slang terms people use to describe poor players. Other names include, fish, donk, idiot, sucker, etc.

I like this definition.

DONKEY
A poker donkey is a bad player, or is he? A poker donkey is a gambler. Not just any old gambler though. The poker donkey will hit their gut shot straight, seven high flush, and miracle full-house after a fourth street flush. The poker donkey is a terrible gambler. The poker donkey will gamble with incorrect odds and hit their miracle card.

A poker donkey does not know any better. Donkeys like to play and they will get paid at your expense. You can expect to find a poker donkey at the lower limits of poker. Usually they will go on good runs of cards. The donkey will run so good that they will be mistaken that they are actually good at poker and berate other players to their fine playing skills.

But, like all donkeys they finally end up on the rail watching other donkeys play. The poker donkey will often be mad and sulk and blame the cards for the absolute terrible run of bad fortune. It is only then that the poker donkey will dig deep to gain knowledge of the game.

I forgot to add to the previous post.

Yes I agree, used far too much. So Amy if you were called a Donkey, just laugh it off. Just remember "The donkey will run so good that they will be mistaken that they are actually good at poker and berate other players to their fine playing skills".

Good luck.

donkeys-The donkey or ass, Equus asinus, is a member of the Equidae or horse family, and an odd-toed ungulate. The words donkey and ass are applied to the domesticated E. asinus. The animal considered to be its wild ancestor is the African Wild Ass, also E. asinus.

Poker Donkey-If a poker player is called a 'donkey,' he's a bad player who makes blatantly bad poker plays. A weak player.

Donkey is also shortened to "donk" by many players to announce that they're playing badly or planning to, as in "I'm going to donk it up tonight."

badonkadonk

I like to use the ebonic phrase, Badonkadonk, when a woman is a donkey.

Any time you are inclined to call someone an Ass or any other profane word, they are more than likely a donk.
