Do not play every hand as a matter of course in the small blind, with an 'I've got money in the pot attitude, so I'm going to play'. Even in a $2/$1 game, assuming 120 hands per hour you will be out $20 at a six seat table and $13 at a nine seat table, if you don't catch a hand.

With regard to the big blind, do you recommend checking if no one has anything regardless of whats in the hand just to see the flop?

Well, I always try. Even if I have 53, I can always get some combination. It happened to me that I killed AK with 53. K53 in flop, guy goes all in, I follow, and i had two pairs, he had one. My winning hand :D

Your money is in the pot so it's a free bet. You may get lucky with your two poor cards.
