Hi,
I play on pokerstars for almost a year now and for a most the year I was playing only in freerolls and i would usually just waste the money I won in these freeroll, I was wondering what you think is the best way for a poker newbie (cash wise) to succeed in expanding his bankroll? What kind of games should I play? Cash games or mtts or HU or SNG?
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I see that you play at Pokerstars, me too. IMO the best option for beginners is SNG (I voted). At the beginning I was playing tournaments for 0,1$, 360 players and freerolls (Besides I still play freerolls, sometimes I win something). It's good option because you won't lose all bankroll, you invest only 0,1$. If you choose this tournament I can tell you that if you want to be in cash you should have about 10-15k chips, blinds about 700/1400 is bubble.. If you will be very good at this level, you can try to play 0,25$ tournament-45 players, and later play level after level etc.

My vote also went to sng, the money you win on FR, no madder how small it is can be used for a lot of .2$ sng which is almost the same as playing fr maybe even wilder so tighten up and you'll cash, and when you get the right adjustment for it you might cash there really often, then when you build some more you can went to stt sng which is also good for us beginners, cash game needs more knowledge about +ev, pot odds vs poker odds which is imho not so important in mtt

I find the best way to build a small bankroll is the turbo heads up sit and gos. The 500 chip ones on the merge network are good. Only problem is if the deck goes cold it is also a quick way to lose

This really is dependant on which game you're best at.

I think for small bankrolls though, on pokerstars you can play as low as 10cent SnG's so if your roll is really tiny this would likely be the best way to avoid going bust. This is how I built my roll and then moved to different game types.

What does it mean small bankroll 10 dollars? 50 dollars? Anyway I would go with double or nothing or regular SNGs. Start with the lowest buy in.. Definitively do not play cashgame :)

Those 10cents 360 SNG on Stars are beatable. They also have 50cents 360 SNG which play very similar.

I'd like to get 100VPP playing those but I have to play a LOT for that I think.

They are a less stressful way to do it. You can blow your entire bankroll in a cash game without proper bankroll management. I think they steps tournies on FTP until you get a $26 or $75 ticket...then switch to a matrix SNG for cash, is a great way to build a bankroll with low risk.

I personally built my roll playing SnG's but I think it comes down to what you feel you're best at.

I think for a beginning player, it's a good place to start.

I think it's a personal preference. I agree that when starting out your money may last longer there. If you like tournaments over cash games then it goes without saying you will enjoy sng more-

What is your bankroll roughly? If it's like really low, then cash games probably aren't going to be best. SnG's, you can play on pokerstars from like 10c and quite easily build a roll.

I started at the 10c 360man's with a $7.00 roll and moved up but it took a while.

well my bank roll at the min is 300 euro,, your right it does take time on cash tables, it would even take longer with small bank roll, its a waiting game with the cash game,so i dont no might try tables of 6 or 9 sng

I am having success with MTT, So I would recommend it , if you can get to cash almost everytime , it can be very very profitable
But SitAndGo will be my second.

I didn't vote cause I go 100% with what ramdeebam says. Some people have a knack for cash games, but they suck at SNGs. Some excell at HU, some crush MTTs. You have to find the area you do best in. SNG is a good place to start with small BRs though.

I also agree that it depends on what you're good at. I took freeroll money and grew a nice bankroll playing SNG's.

I would recommend sit n go's or small tournament up to 300-400 people. I think with a little patience and a little luck you could almost always make it in the money.

The best way to build your roll is to play against opponents who are below your ability level. The tricky part is figuring out how to maximize your win rate.

I think sng's are probably the best way to not risk your bankroll and at the same time build it at a fast rate if you are winning at a high percentage of your sng's you should see what is good for you.
