Hi everyone

I have a question regarding sitting out when there are three players in a blinds game - e.g. Texas Holdem:

Player1, Player2, Player3 are in a hand. Player1 is the dealer, Player2 posts the small blind and Player3 sits out.

Because Player 3 sits out, Player1 posts the big blind. Now the hand is completed with only 2 players Player1 and Player2.

After this hand is completed, the next hand starts. Player3 is still sitting out. Player2 is the dealer. Since it's 2 players, Player2 posts the small blind again and Player1 the big blind.

Player1 posts the big blinds twice in a row. Is this normal? Also, is it more advantageous strategically being in the big blind position or the small blind position?

Cheers - thanks for any help!

you got it wrong. when a player sits out in a tourney ,he plays blinds exactly like he would if he was playing. in cash the remaining two just play like its heads up.

Sorry...this question relates to cash games.

So when player3 sits out, the game becomes heads up. Since it's now heads up, should player1 pay the small blind and player 2 pay the big blind?

Thanks!

yes ,heads up the button pays small blind and the opponent pays big blind. button acts first preflop and acts last post flop.(is in position)

Thanks Vinyl...but what about in an online game where the small blind has already been played by player2 before player3 sits out?

Cheers.

If Player 3 sits out before the hand starts then what should happen is the button gets moved in front of Player 2, Player 2 pays the small blind, Player 1 pays the big blind and then the game continues like an ordinary heads up game. So not quite what Vinyl said.

This happens because if Player 1 got to keep the button (and pay the small blind) then Player 2 would have to pay the big blind - which isn't fair, since they'd just paid the big blind the hand before, while Player 1 would get to skip a big blind.

I don't think it should be possible online for Player 3 to sit out after Player 2 has already paid their blind - the software should have determined who is and isn't going to be dealt a hand before the blinds are put out. If it did happen somehow though, then I believe what should happen is the hand is cancelled, the button is made right as above, and then a new hand is started heads up.

Thanks for your help Oz and Vinyl.

It seems reasonable that once the small blind is posted, the big blind guy can't sit out, or that if he can do that then the button swaps positions.

Interesting scenario...any other opinions gladly accepted!

Cheers.

It would be very advantageous if the sitting out player didn't have to post blinds. I've never seen this. The sitting out players always have to post blinds in every tourney I've ever played in!

Cash game.

And to Oz, it posts in parallel. It would ask SB first and if SB has it checked to auto post it'll then come to BB and if he decided he was done before that hand and unchecked Auto Post then he could hit sit out. From this point it would ask the very next person in parallel if they want to pay blind. In this case, there would be only one other person to ask.
