I am sticking to BRM rules that i learned (on here, tyvm) and have a silly question. If you are adhering to the 5% rule for cash games and lose your buy- in do you then sit with 5% of your NEW account total. For instance, if i have 100 bucks, then lose my $5 buy in, do i sit again with $5 or do 5% of $95? Does that make sense? lol thanks everyone

If you have $100 and you lose $5, Your bankroll is now $95 !!!!!!!!!!

The 5% rule allows very very little room for error. You should be using a range ie play nl$5 when your roll is between $75-$200.

The BRM guideline is more often stated as 20 buyins rather than 5%. There's a difference. If you're using 20 buyins, you must have at least $100 to sit at nl5. But if you shade this so it's 5%, you can sit with $4.75.

This isn't a large difference, but it's the first step down a slippery slope. For instance, what if your roll has dropped to $75? Is it okay to sit at nl5 by buying in for $3.75? And how far can you take this? $50 and $250? $25 and $1.25?

Fwiw, I usually suggest 30 buyins to move up, so $150 for nl5. And drop to a lower stake if you fall below 20 buyins, even a cent below. After all, if you had $150 and now have $99.99, you're not exactly crushing it. So better to go back to nl2 and rebuild to $150 (or more since 30x is a minimum, not a requirement to move up) so you're rolled to try again.

It really depends on how you lost the $5. If you played bad, don't buy back in. If you played good, and just had a really bad beat; go ahead and buy in.

some say 2% or 5% 20-50 buyins depending on whether you play cash or tournaments.

In general it depends how good a player you are. A beginner should have about 50 buyins, whereas a good player can get away with 20
