A couple of times recently I have found myself in top 10 at a tournament. Cards are not great and as a tight player that means folding a lot.

In this situation where blinds are very high and you can only afford a few more BBs, what is best tactic? Playing super aggressive or loosening up at this stage would be like giving up, but if no great cards are being dealt staying tight is also a losing bet.

Just wondering what others do.

In my opinion I wouldn't loosen up too much to be pushing any two especially 10 handed, I would study what my opponents play is like, is the bb tight or loose ? and if he is tight I would loosen upto pushing any ace, king+,Q9o+, any pocket pairs and any suited connectors 67+ as its not worth pushing any two as in my experience you wont get called by worse and may get a silly call on there part with a better hand which tbh is not that bad of play as they will be expecting you to be shoving anything to steal the blinds. but if its just you and the bb I would push any of the above hands even if you get called by a better hand you wont be a huge underdog and will still have good chance of taking the pot.

also I think you may be interested in a push shove chart and also a program called equilab which is an equity trainer and is good for working out all these spots you can find this on pokerstategy.com its a free program (which is always good) :) and also maybe google some ICM trainers as well

hope my useless opinion helps in some way :p

The best strategy, of course, is not to get short in the first place ;)

However, once you are down to an cautionary M ratio, I suggest the above, preferably in an open field ;)

Yeah lol I too think this is the best strategy haha although these turbo's and hypers this can happen in a matter of minutes due to the blind and antes

Definitely playing loose will not be a good tactic in such situations. The general strategy is to go all in with a premium hand but since u may not get them that frequently you have to try and steal the blinds whenever it is possible. If you have any ace or a pair either at cutoff, Button or small blind then going all in is the standard play.

Sometimes you can just shove about anything on late positions such as small blind/button but it depends on the type of player that you are shoving on. If you sensed weakness in any previous play pull the trigger.
This strategy can also be used at the time close to the bubble but if you have to go through a bigger stack/active player then be careful. These are the ones that come to mind.

back in the very same situation right now. At a table of donkeys so i've been playing even tighter than normal, but blinds and antes have me seriously short. I wont survive next couple of BBs. Maybe I need to play more aggressive before I get to this stage, like it was said above, dont let yourself become short stacked in the first place.

First of and I quote "A couple of times recently I have found myself in top 10 at a tournament". Meaning youre good.
At the later stage, its all shootout. You cant do anything about it.
I think the best is just maximize your play and accumulate chips as best as you can from start to finish.

Pulled that one back with a lucky shove, then some agression got me to a decent level of chips. Ended up losing all in, but was a decent hand beat by a better one so no probs there.
