Hello Poker People, I am very angry about myself because I do the same fault so often. Please pros, could you help me to switch it ? Ok, what's the problem ? I will give you an example from my last game I lost all my chips: I had AK, the flop brought K and some low cards, the turn and the river low cards too. My opponent bet and I called all in. I felt so safe because I had the best pair and the best kicker. But what happend ?! The opponent hold pocket pair kings and of course I lost against this three of a kind. Why do I everytime feel so safe if I hold the best pair ?! I don't get it in my mind that it is really sure that the opponent hold three of a kind when he bets so much :-( ? Any ideas how I can stop the rush in me if I see this situation ? Thanks a lot. Greetings from Katja
Theres very little you can do in such a situation. Ive been doing this for 6 years and even i would have called my AK with a King on the flop and i would have lost to trips too. Its part of poker, theres very little you can do in such uncomfortable situations.
Hi kaetzchenfg. If there is one thing I have learned, if I have one pair, that is all I have no matter if it is top pair and I have the best kicker. One pair wins some, but also gets beat a lot more. It is a big mistake to feel safe with hands like that, and it's hard for anyone to give you good advice without knowing more about the hand. GL to you
What about preflop action, what happen there, did u raise, after the flop did u c-bet, if u just called the blind, and checked it to the river, no wonder the guy went allin, but calling his all in, dont care if u have top pair, its a donk move, u had so many chances to bet for information u did not take one of them, and u wonder why u lost, sorry to be harsh on u bro, but u have to bet to FIND OUT where u stand at all time.
was there preflop action? post flop action? any bettings or raises. You need to get some infos from villian...but however you found yourself in difficult situation ..,if on the turn that was the only bet ,that should be an easy fold from you

for more helpful answers please include the following:
1. Type of game - tournament or cash
2. stakes - tournament buy-in or cash game blinds
3. Action for entire hand - did you raise, did opponent reraise, etc...from preflop to river
4. have you ever seen this player play before, what type of information do you have on them, tight, aggressive, loose, maniac, shark, ect...
without this information it is impossible to tell if you did something wrong. ak vs kk happens, and usually someone gets hammered and loses a lot DO NOT listen to the comment above that you have to make feeler bets to find out where you are in a hand, that is not necessarily true, or that your AI call was a donk move, it may have been the right play, depending on the situation and the answers to the above listed questions.
now, with all things being somewhat standard, this particular situation is called a 'cooler' and is something that happens in poker. you would have to have a great read on your opponent to fold in this spot so its just bad luck.
You say this happens a lot, I have to assume not always the same situation, cant imagine you have AK vs KK and hit a K on the flop that often. We need more hands to look at to see where you are making mistakes, this hand is a really bad example for analysis because most of the time both players are doing the right thing and someone loses a lot.
