I recently read a story from Matt Bolt about where in order for him to get a staking deal with Dusty Schmidt, he had to "play 16,000 hands per week minimum". Roughly, how many tables was this guy playing to get many hands in a week?

On Stars you get ~100 hands per hour per table.

So 16 tabling you'd have to play 10 hours per week, 8 tabling 20 hours per week and 4 tabling 40 hours per week.

Some rooms play slower and the average for a table will be less than 100/hands/hour

Yeah PKR is slow! I think you play full-ring as well right? I am talking about 6max here, should've said

I can 16 table on Stars but I play much worse than when I 4 table so I avoid it now.

I would imagine I could beat 2nl and break even or slightly win at 5 nl, anything higher and I'd be losing. Not playing just AA/KK btw :) Tight but not that tight

I was thinking about trying this on Bovada...has anyone ever tried it there before? I 2-table (whoo hoo) on there from time to time and the action is so so for the most part.

Think I started playing cash about 2 years ago.

I should probably be playing higher than 10nl by now but I've been held back by tilt. I think playing too many tables (8+) is a terrible mistake, it makes you play badly and predictably, it hinders improvement and sucks enjoyment out of the game. Now I don't play more than 6 tables, but most sessions I'm playing 4.

How many hours are you 4-tabling? Why is tilt less likely to happen playing 4 tables as opposed to 6 tables or more?

This. I noticed I fall into way too many traps if autopiloting. It usually happens when I get good hands on multiple tables, massive loss of value ensues.

Now I think that maximizing total WR (and reducing variance!) means not overextending myself in regard to number of tables. My best results by far have been while playing up to 6 tables and paying maximum attention.

In fact here is my total data, 426k hands from 2NL-25NL. I mostly played 6 tables but while getting them up/swapping lower numbers piled up.

Yes my overall win rate is crap but in my defense I started out as a total beginner and small WR is better than nothing :p volume helped out with the total winnings.

Note that win rate playing 2 tables is 4 times higher than playing 6 tables  but OK, spilled milk.

I play around 6h per week. Sorry if my answer was confusing I was answering both questions and was talking about tilt in relation to the what stakes do I play question. I don't think tilt is more likely playing more tables, but for sure you will lose your money more quickly when you do tilt!

Consistency is probably a function of well defined style of play on small number of tables, which is then easy to expand while keeping the stats stable. I think this is optimal. Since I am fairly tight anyway there is not much space for further reduction when multitabling :D

Problems ensued on turn/river due to worse ranging, hand reading, bet size reading etc., preflop/flop are pretty automatic.

As for the tilt in relation to number of tables, when playing too few tables there is definitely an inclination to make fancy plays more and individual bad beats hurt more. When multitabling it is normal to not even see what happened in the hand, you just act and move on. Less tilty for sure.
