I use to consider myself a winning player tournaments if I won >10% of my games. I currently have about a 25% win rate. However I feel that ROI is a better indicator of success. Of course one expects to win more then we put in. Any thoughts or suggestions?

For instance I have a 20% win rate in 10 player sit-n-go but I haven't had good ROI. Even though I can cash I'm in the negative with money won. Clearly my win rate will have to be much greater if I am looking for success.

Absolutely, ROI is the much, MUCH more important metric IMO.

This is a massive over-simplification, and not in any way realistic, but it illustrates the point pretty well.

Say you play single table SnGs where there's a 50/30/20 payout split.

If you somehow cashed in 55% of your games, but all your cashes were third places, you'd still be down money. Even though 55% ITM sounds crazy good.

On the other hand, if you only cashed in 25% of your games but they were all first places, you'd be up.

I think a focus on "cashing rate" or ITM percentage can lead to some bad habits too. It might make you play too passive around the bubble for example, trying to just squeak over for a mincash when taking more risks that might bust you outside the money but might also set up up for a deep run and a much bigger cash would be the +EV play.

Yes your analysis is spot on. Definitely am going more and more by the ROI. Think I won't even consider the % anymore. I have squeaked into the money many times. I have also been super aggressive with a big stack and got eaten up with the coin flips.

Always ROI, never your ITM%, or cashing %, or win %... always ROI%.

On another note 3 of 10 positions are ITM. I would simply think that an average player is ITM 30% of the time and winning 10% of the time. There is a balance of being in the money and winning first that will maximize your ROI.

Well, want to say, ROI, and 10% are no better.
the real data considering or measuring for wining player is $ per hour

so see this

if your ROI is 400% very good right?
but the level you play is 0.25 buyin games, and play like 4 games same time per hour, just brings you 4X4X0.25= 4 dollars per hour

see if the high stake pro have 3% ROI, his average game is 3 hours but, his buyin is 5K on average with single game played no multi tabling.

his hours of wining is 3%*5K/3=50 dollars per hour
this is much better than this

so in general, ROI and percentage is no better.
