Ring game play

It has come to my attention recently that I need some serious help on my ring game strategies, as this is the weakest part of my game.

I am pretty good at large tourneys playing 18% of my hands on average. When I get to showdowns in these tourneys, I am also pretty successful with a win on about 3/4 of them. However, I am having trouble translating my success (if you will call it that) to ring games

I am looking for your strategies that you use during any particular ring game. I.e. what percentage of hands do you normally play in a 6/9 player ring game, do the same rules apply involving position (only play premium UTG), etc

I am unfortunately in the same scenario as you and must say I would like some of the same advice. My advice to you (I hope its right) is that 18% is way too low for ring games I think. A lot of times you can limp with drawing hands and if your in late position its a good habit to pick up, at least it helped me

well i personally like the micro cg's on player only. i like to play at a full ring game at teh .02/.04 level. i buy in for 2.40 and i will play tight super aggressive. that is my style. if in late position you can open up some but i still suggest playing good cards or big draws (to the turn atleast) when out of position. i wont normally play below AJ os unless in late postition. and i always come in for a pot sized raise when i come into the pot preflop (of course this is situation dependent cuz sometimes you just wanna limp in late position with big hands too). anyway i suggest trying this out and then you can open up once you learn who is a regular at that level and who is not. fortunatley playersonly is a small site so i learn who is a regular and who isnt pretty fast. gl and play on. remember tourneys are great but the real money is in the cg's.

At full ring tables, you should be playing about 15% of your hands. Around 18-20% at 6 max.

But I'm a lag-tard and I've been running at around 35% recently. I still have success. So its hard to say there's an optimal VPIP range.

thanks for that article, it really helped. I also found the part where the types of players you run into and was able to tighen at least some of the holes in my game. I'll put this into play next time i hit the tables

ChuckTs did really well with that post. It's an excellent foundation for the micro and low limit games.

I'm about 15.5 VP overall in FR. But that changes depending on the table. This morning I was 30% and 35% I think on each of my tables ($50NL FR I finished up just over $60).

No Limit tournaments are a completely different animal than No Limit ring games. If you have read Dan Harrington's 3 volumes on tournament play, checkout his two volume set on Cash Games...very different tactics and strategies.
