I'm a novice player [about 2 months in] and my orginal plan was to learn limit, and then turn my attention to no limit.I'm beginging to second guess my plan and was wondering if most modern players begin with nl and don't bother learning limit?

NLHE is much more popular atm. Nothing wrong with learning limit, and knowing limit benefits your nl game, but there are a few common reasons that are given for preferring nl:

1. Bigger player pool, including more less skilled players. This makes it easier to find favorable table conditions.
2. Limit has higher variance than NL.
3. The average winrate for winning players is higher in NL than for limit.

I think it's safe to say that most beginning players start today with nl rather than limit. There are reasons given for playing limit instead as well:

1. Risk per hand is lower (you can risk as much as you have in front of you in nl - you can't playing limit).
2. Mistakes are cheaper (see 1. above).

I think either is ok. Learning limit holdem first will get you to grips with some of the math aspects of poker quicker, like pot odds and implied odds.

Also the transition will be easier if you're interested in other poker games like omaha hi/lo, stud, razz.

As someone who knows a small amount about NL holdem cash games and nothing about any other variation of poker, I'm curious if anyone thinks starting out with one variation and moving to another would be a good plan.

My assumption is that focussing your learning to one game will be the best option since the carry over between the limit and NL skillsets wouldn't be perfect, and any limit skills that will be useful for NL you'll probably learn anyway.
But, this is assumption, I haven't learned significant amounts about multiple variations of poker so I can't speak from experiance.

i started with nl holdem but got tired of it and stopped playing. i got into stud games and draw games then pl omaha and pl omaha8 then came back to holdem lol.

if u can play the pl and nl limit games well, ur better off playing em over a limit game because u can make more in less time.

same thing is true if ur better at stud or omaha, u should avoid thier hi/lo counterparts because of split pots. u should be able make more $.

i dont like limit holdem. never have and probably never will, and im a stud player and play numerous limit games. it just gives bad players excuses to stay waaay to long in hands. id rather have a chance at some1s whole stack if they want to be "adventurous" rather than just 1 bet, 2 bets etc. its also boooring and mechanical also.

id play pl holdem only if theres a table of aggress bad players to see a flop cheap and trap ppl. that way i dont have to risk much to see a flop and out play em post flop.

nope nope just no reason to play limit holdem, its boring and if i wanted to get money id make more playing anything else, especially a nl or pl game.

ive heard the arguments about upswings/downsswings in nl , pl games compared to limit. but ur gonna getem in all forms of poker. Like if u call too many late bets and chase like a new person would in lim holdem, ur gonna have serious downswings and upswings sessions also. ive had awful swings playing stud8 especially at aggressive table also.

anyway, id do my best to avoid limit holdem even for a beginner. if ur just starting out, 2 months like u say, id recommend playchip tables to develop common skills like reading a board quickly and accurately.

have fun playing lim holdem if u decide to play anyway
