I began playing poker properly back in August, while not playing perfectly, I managed to for up £30 from the £40 I put into my account. In November I ended with £60 in my account and decided to begin playing with a bank roll of £100 on 6-max tables. Mainly playing min cash games, I have continiously lost and I am now down £30 putting me into the negative even though I have learnt more strategy and believe I have improved my game.

I don't want to complain about bad beats, but I feel like a big problem is my wins are small and my beats are bad. E.g. I'll win 5 hands just winning small amounts, 1 bad hand and I'll lose my entire stack.

I have literally not been positive since I began trying to play with bankroll management and wondered if anyone could give me some advice on what I could do to begin to improve my game and actually start winning something.

The first thing is to do what you have just done, ask a lot of questions. Set aside the time you want to play, and I don't mean 16 hours a day. Spend more time on here reading about the problems others are having and try to help them too. It will make you feel good about yourself. Also set aside your pride and go down to the lower levels. $100 is not going to make you rich, so don't even think about it. Instead think about having some fun. If a player makes a big raise and you only have one pair, he probably has you beat, so Is it worth losing your whole buy in to find out. One last thing, stop believing you are going to lose even before you are dealt your first hand. I say this because I've been through it, and everything I'm telling you, I've been told right here at CC. I never play until about 3 or 4 pm and go to bed at about 10 pm. Are you in the CC Freeroll Club? If not you should take the time everyday to work your way into it. Besides the money, you can learn a lot about how these players play and they are tough and you will run into other players just like then all the way down to penny levels. Sorry I'm making this so long, but I really want to see you get your game together. So if I were you I would get into everything CC has to offer, and that is a lot.

I'm not expecting to get rich from poker, I do consider myself a recreational player, I just enjoy the game. I'd be okay if I could tread water as I learn, but consistent losing has been a bit disheartening.

I've only just joined cardschat, but have previously read a few articles. Would it be good to take a short break? I feel like I could be on some form of tilt... I will definitely look at more of the stuff on CC. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the answer. Well the break you can take is what I said about just playing so many hours a day. And if you are new to poker, I know how hard that is. When I started out I played every minute I could and I lost a lot, probably because of being so tired. I'm not saying that is you. Jreece awhile back I deposited $50 on FF and I've cashed out twice and have over $200 on there now. And I started at $.01/$.02 and believe it or not I could win $8 a day then throw in a small MTT and pick up another $10. In a little bit that adds up. When I got to $100 I went up a level. Now I'm at $.05/$.10 and I'm happy to stay there because I just like having fun at it, and don't want to lose my bank roll. Don't know how much time you have on your hands, but have you heard of the Social Media Club here? If you would be interested in finding out about it, I can help you get started. It's fun and every month they have a freeroll for the members and every 3 months they have a drawing and you can win up to $400. I did. Maybe we could talk some on pm. I'll help you anyway I can.

There is this peculiarity about poker. One can find a winning way with no learning at all. Before I learned much at all about the game I had built a br via freerolls. I could have continued that for a long time without learning much new.

But I was running into situations where I had no idea what was going on, and I sought help. Googled poker discussions. Actually probably yahooed that because it was before google became a verb. I found CC, and began learning more, at a pretty fast clip.

Here is where the peculiarity come in. I began loosing more often. I finally realized that I was being much more experimental. As with all experiments, they mostly fail. But I began to understand why they fail.

So I went back to the style that had me slowly winning. But whereas before I was less sure why I was winning, I could then see better what others were doing. For the most part I did not want to copy what they were doing, but in the recognition of what they were doing, I gained valuable insight into what I was doing, both right and wrong.

If you are sure it is not just variance, return to you slowly winning style and re-evaluate.

Personally, I think it is normal variance (the ebb and flow of luck).

I feel as if I have still improved... I think I am maybe just looking at this wrong and expecting too much out of myself as I havent played for that long. I have only just joined CC so I guess I need to have a look at everything on here and just reevaluate how I'm playing. I'd be interested in that and PMing would be very helpful.

I'm not entirely sure it isn't variance. I guess you could say in the long run that is only being down £10, but the loss over this period from November kind of makes me feel as if I'm doing something wrong.

From a short look at CC articles I feel that if I just relax a bit, expect less from myself and keep learning I could get back on track.

Would it be a good idea to switch to full ring instead of 6-max?

Do you think you can slow your game down a lot? If yes, you could go to full ring. If you currently suffer from any boredom in 6 max then no, fr will bore you to tears.

BTW, most of the time poker is boring. Punctuated by moments of sheer panic.

Jreece, I am understanding from your Original Post that you started playing poker in Aug. of 2014. Is that correct? If not, what do you mean by "playing poker properly" since Aug? I am curious, as I may have some personal insight for you, but want to clarify where your "poker timeline" begins.

As in I have played a little bit of poker here and there, but didn't ever learn any strategy or know what I was doing until August. By 'properly' I mean I considered it a hobby then.

I started playing over 40 years ago and online when it started. Everyone goes through this phase. Its called variance. sometimes it seems like it will never end but it does.

Save your reply's. As a noob, you only get 10 per day. Make sure you get those 10, but don't waste the last 2 of the day.

I like that you found this as a hobby. Hobby seldom do more than entertain, but on occasion they can lead to a career. I got interested in PC's very early on, and retired having spent most of my adult life fixing them. So my hobby paid off.

I have recently had to decide between the two of these. Since I started playing about 6 months ago I had played 6 max. About two weeks ago I read a book that mainly focused on full ring and decided to make the switch. As of now I would not say I have been more profitable but can see the potential there. I play 4NL but plan to move up very soon. You just have to slow down your game as someone else said and only get involved in optimal spots.

Sometimes you have to think about what you do wrong, always happens to me and i realize that the desire to win playing against me because it makes me forget the theoretical mental part that has the poker, and think that the other is lying too

Well, are you familiar with pot odds? pot odds are a big part of cash games, so look into this, and I recommend that you make pot odds an important part of your decisions in cash games. It's your choice if you use pot odds, or how much you use them, not mine. Have a great day!

You have to first learn to know the value of your hands as well as others and what others could have in situations. I would start watching videos and reading a little bit, but keep with micro and you can tread and learn...

Just want to show you how this happens to all of us. Yesterday I player a MTT at ACR and was knocked out with a crap hand. I also played a ring game there. and lost half my buy in. I played a Mtt at Carbon and got knocked out with a crap hand and also played full ring and lost my buy in quick. Did the same at FF. So I quit because I never reenter is I lose like that. Later I tried low ball at Carbon because the day before I had won $20 in that, but lost at that too. But one thing about it is I'm not going to let that stop me. I'm just going to play again today. I can't let losses get under my skin. If I do I will just lose more

I'm playing for a year and still only lose your money ... well, for the year somewhere I lost $ 1000 .. play the 1/2 $. My main mistake is my nerves and crazy and so started to play well and I know that soon I will win. I think that from the beginning we all lose))).
