A friend of mine and I have a argument we need settled....

My friend thinks that if you do well in play money MTT's (make the bubble, final table or win) on a consistent basis that your good enough to play in real money tourneys and perform well.

I disagree. I think the real money game is way different and if he starts playing real money he's gonna get eaten alive. I suggested he try micro stakes first but he wants a bigger game.

Your thoughts please!

Play money tables allow you to familiarize yourself with the site software & the basic rules of a particular game. All else is illusion & delusion.
Wish him well but do not bankroll him.

Yes, I agree with the posters above. Play money is nothing like real money poker.

There is often a significant difference even between freeroll MTT's and play money, especially when you get down to 20% or less of the original field remaining. You have to remember that play money means play money, people play like they have nothing to lose because they don't.

Tell your friend to find some freeroll MTT's that are about the same size as his play money MTT's and see if he can make it to the final tables at the same rate that he makes it in play money. I used to think that play money poker was the same thing too until I actually tried real money, then I got hit by multiple trains that I didn't even see coming. It's a very rude wake-up call when you think you have things all figured out, and try to go up against a couple of halfway decent players who seem like they can read your mind and see your hole cards.

If your friend wants to go straight from play money to swimming with the sharks at the higher stakes, those players will be very, very glad to see him.

Why ever play with play money tourneys when there are lots of freerolls for REAL money?

Tell your friend to take some money he can afford to lose and go to a casino or poker room. $200.00 is cheap tuition to learn what he does or doesn't know.

From play money to high stakes....not to be rude but that sounds like he needs to be awaken from dreamland....he might be a good player (not denying that) but he is just setting himself for a faillure....what happens if and when he loses...hopefully not chase his losses...my advice is start low and slow...work your way up...it will save a lot of heartache and headaches...

Cash Games (even the Micros) require a different, more discplined attitude.

I kinda like this from Kenzie_96:
"Wish him well but do not bankroll him."
