So I've been playing a bunch of live free rolls around town and a lot of online tournaments. I know people always say to read your opponent but I can't get a feel most of the time. What are some tricks yall use in order to read your opponent?

Reading opponent is one of the strategies in poker. This is especially so in live games.

You can read opponents by observing such tells. Signs that will tell you about his hand.

So then as a poker player myself, how can I hide such tells. Do I mix it up or just do the same thing for folds and big hands?

to me its about play style

some players play way to many hands- obviously loose,
are they aggressive too? trap em! let them push into you when you hit
if they're passive bet more

others are too tight, playing only premiums- thats a read, bet into them more often, with most any 2 cards to steal, if they stay in the hand, be careful and ready to bail

if players think you are tighter they will bet into you more, a check reraise usually folds them

you can play the player type more than the cards if you can figure out villians style (but keep somewhat tight aggressive yourself)

hope that helps
(I dont look for tells like facial expressions or much ever- Ive faked those;)
and that probally works only on newer players)

Im guessing you are wondering what kind of tells you are looking for. Well online you dont have much to go with, basically the only 2 tells you are going to be able to pick up on are bet sizing (which is the biggest and best tell you are going to get online) and timing (which will only work in higher buy ins online and more serious games). Those are the only 2 tells youll be able to use online and the thing is, if you are playing freerolls or low buy ins, these wont matter much because people aren't paying enough attention or caring enough to do anything the correct way.
When it comes to live poker there are plenty of tells that can let you know if a person is bluffing or not. When a person gets very still and doesnt move a lot this is usually a sign that the person is bluffing, if they are more relaxed after they make that tricky river bet they are probably telling the truth.
If they play with their chips and go to make a bet but then pull back and check, this is an obvious sign of weakness and you can probably go ahead and bet and get them off their hand as long as you do it with confidence, because they thought they had a read on you, but they were too scared to actually go with their gut.
If a person checks quickly and then check raises they more than likely have the hand.
There are plenty of live tells to let you know what kind of situation your opponent is in, things like touching of the neck and head and face show stress and weakness.
If someone verbal bets a lot of times its a sign of strength.
All of these are just basic tells, but be aware, when playing with tricky players or more advanced players they may put off false tells, which are signs of weakness that are so obvious that they want you to play back at them, I'll often use these certain things to lure my opponent into thinking im weak when im actually very very strong, it pays me well especially in tournaments. lol Good luck at the tables.

Try to note strategies during the game, and even use the notes to remember what someone did, they'll probably do it again.

When playing live, I wait for BB to play and watch how players bet and fold. Live players are not like the movies, with the most obvious tells. The more experienced the player the more they vary actions in a particular hand. You will have to play a lot of hands with varying players to get a good idea of what to look for in strong hands and weak ones.

Observe the behave of the players in hands with possibilities of bluff and good sets, for example. In the beginning is hard, but become easier

To read an opponent, I analyze his actions before, the size of his raise, and his actions in the previous hands in a similar situation, then I can assume what about my opponent's hand and can act accordingly.

Well, do not play live tournaments yet, but tournaments onn line is much more difficult to notice traces of opponents but always gives to notice something like always of the same value betting, bet very fast when it hits the flop and when has nothing bet too high . It's about time even to notice some details of the opponents .

Watch you opponents as Most will play a certain hand the same way every time they get it. If you see that someone goes all in (no matter what table position they are in), when the get AA or KK, then when the go all-in, it is a good tell that they have this as their pocket cards.

I guess that´s the best advice here about live playing. You got it!!!

The most easiest way to ready your opponent is to see how many hands they play. If they're raising in most positions, they're probably a loose-aggressive player. If they're raising in a select few positions, they're probably a tight-aggressive player. If they're calling rather than raising, they're probably a passive player. You can also get reads based on bet sizing and whether they bet in certain situations or not. For example, a player who always continuation bets on dry boards and then another time checks on the same textured board should set off alarm bells in your head. You can also read your opponent through physical tells. For instance, when a player has a strong holding, they may sit upright in their chair whereas when they're weak they may be slouching over the table. Hope this helps.

As you know, it's harder to get a read on someone online, but if you catch someone at a bluff, or notice aggressiveness, you should exploit that when you get a nice hand ( just lay low and let the be aggressive or bluff ).

Actually in your case I'd suggest reading a poker book... perhaps "Poker for Dummies" ?
