range is personal. its the range of hands you are willing to play. calculating range depends on how loose or tight you play. tight players have a shorter range of cards they are willing to play will more loose players have a larger range of cards they are willing to play. this is a basic description i'm sure someone else will come along and fill in further blanks.

When you're involved in a hand, rather than saying, "I think my opponent has QQ," you want to put him on a range of hands -- a set of possibilities based on betting patterns, preflop and postflop action, among other factors. On each street you can eliminate hands you don't think are logical for him to have, narrowing his possible range.

It's not something you calculate, but you can take an opponent's range and plug it into a tool like PokerStove to calculate your equity and pot odds.

Round cat is right on.

So are you for asking. This is def. the way to go.

How I would define narrowing someones range?

If you pick up JJ in the Hi-jack and make a standard raise. The btn calls. You can immediately start narrowing his range. He doesnt have QQ+, AK. Probably not even AQ.

So basically your 1 step closer to knowing his cards. However, there are many steps. Taking into consideration all of the other reads you have on him, you can get pretty accurate. But it gets REALLY hard with other variables as well. Unknowns/ Aggros/ Dry boards/ draw heavy brds. The list goes on forever.

You have to judge the changes in an opponent's range based upon their relative betting position also.

Range are all the (estimated) hands of your opponents. And then you make the  calculating on a "guessing" basis. Don´t make the mistake to put your opponent on one exact hand, give him a range of possible hands...
