One of the reasons for raising is to get money in the pot. I would argue that to raise when you think you have the best hand, depends upon your position at the table. If in early, if you raise too nuch you'll drive other player out. A call will keep them in, and you can raise later. In late position you can raise straight away, if other players have called. Conversely, a weakish hand is better raised early to try and drive players out. Middle position is a suck it and see situation, depending on your cards and who called before you.

I believe that if you have a strong card then you need to lift it, you can skip a spy that will take you to the street coming on the river.

no doubt everything depends on the position behind the table and the strength of your hand

It's good to see that there is no definitive system for raising. Everybody has their own way to do it, which it is as it should be.

I believe that with a strong hand you should raise immediately, regardless of your location.

I always wondered about when to raise. I find that raising early does drive out a lot of players, but there is always that pne who hangs on and hangs on for the river. And often I get nipped by him or her.

In my opinion, you forgot about the importance of the game. This also affects the tactics of the game.

redmast : are you saying that some games are more important than others? Every game you play in should be as important as any other you play in. You're in it to win it.

Depends on the game and situation. In limit Hold'em I'm always pumping the pot so when my hand does hit it will pay off the times it doesn't.

When you're sitting in the dealer's chair and only the two blinds are left, it is often worthwhile to raise and try and drive them out. It is really a form of bluff, unless you have a hand.

Depends on the situation and opponent im up against.Sometimes i raise to protect my hand against drews in multiway pot, sometimes i raise to get as fast all money in becouse a lot of scary cards for my opponent can hit on turn and river...and on some boards its best to just check call twice and then check shove.....
