Hey everyone, I'm new here and look forward to learning more and becoming a better player. I have a question relating to a game I feel confused about in Texas. I was holding a pair of 5’s and the other player had an A and a 3. On the table was a pair of 10’s, a pair of J’s and an 8. Who should have won that hand?

seen this a lot with new players,
its okay (and welcome to the forum)
best 5 cards are a players hand,
you both hold two pair 10s and Js (your 5s became nul with second higher pair on board)
he held Ace high kicker, your kicker would be an 8

For texas holdem, you combine the board and your hand and form the strongest 5 card hand.

So for you, your strongest hand would be TTJJ8 while opponent has TTJJA.

I wish you had 99 so it would be great or deeper learning in Poker. I was there at your point too, whatever explanation on a hand rankings or discuss about poker game statics, you will assumingly understand but definitely not all. My best advice to you Sir, buy 1 deck of card and find a person or friends that knows about the poker well..And he will explain to you one by one.. especially your concern about your hand 55 against A3, why he won.. Statical explanation about the hand is not enough unless you will play and play more esp. in live games you can do talking or asking next player to you and surely they will entertain you. But play and play more just to learn basic hand rankings and settings will cost you a lot. Like me, if I remember I already play live tournaments and main events online for a couple months, I win big, I lost big, but still I dont know all about hand rankings Example, Just later on I found out that I hold KK, and the board was K,3,3 and one player goes All in and I snap call 2nd nuts on the flop. Now heads up he's card going to be a showdown was A,J, then turn 3, river 3. I was too shock why I dont win that hand and makes me start to feel something goes wrong around. Thats why take my advice first before you play more and more to reduce the risk.
