OK, how to put people on sets? If you play live, you have to be attentive and hopefully have profiled the player a bit. Online, HUD stats can help you a lot.
Live: If someone is calling a lot and plays passive after the flop, it is pretty easy. On a low board, action from a passive player should raise red flags. Smart players will be playing sets and repping sets similar, so you need to pay attention to c/r they do, or check/calls, stuff like this, if you get to SD. You just have to try to see how they play their draws, under pairs, TP etc, and hopefully find fold with your TP hands when you feel they are happy with a board that sets are going to like.
Online: Also, passive players waking up is always a bad sign if you have one pair, except maybe on A high boards, where they like to play Ax a lot. If you dont use a HUD, same as live, you need to pay attention to shown hands and profile.
It is often simply just hard to put players on sets. You have to get used to reading board textures and being able to try to profile. The better the player, the harder profiling can be. Some maniacs play sets - or any strong hand - the same way as total air, there you just have to take your pick to believe or not.
