You played it perfectly!
When someone is pushing every hand,AQ is way ahead of there range and you got your chips in with the best hand, thats all you can ask.Its just poker after that.
Waiting for a big pocket pair would usually lead to your chipstack being taken anyway. As the odds egual out over time in that situation, you will be a big winner.

If he really is pushing EVERY hand, then his range in just that - EVERY hand

Very annoying when this happens. I just sit back and wait for a big hand and then take my chances.

He got lucky. Plain and simple. You have to take a stand at some point and with a decent hand you have to know prior to the call your in front.

Those people are the ones you want to play against every day of the week, but a small warning though. Some people do this to try to hustle u.

Q: "I got all-in with a substantially better hand. What am I doing wrong?"

A: You should have waited for an Ace, so his 8 could have sucked out on that. Because a bigger overcard makes a difference. ...somehow.

Look... Everyone second guesses themselves to some extent. Early in my poker career I remember shoving with A/A in a live tournament, getting called by K/J, flopping a set, and he rivered me for the straight. And all night long I agonized over the hand, wondering if I should have bet less and reevaluated on the flop. Or maybe I could have done something else. But that was just silly and came from a lack of experience/understanding.
The more this happens the more you'll accept it as a bad beat, which is *supposed* to happen a good percentage of the time. You played it correctly. Don't sweat about it. Had you seen his cards you'd have done the same thing.

I assume this is a cash table?

This has happened to me twice in my experience online. One time I won a ton, the other time I lost about 1/4 my bankroll. Consequently, I try and avoid these situations as much as possible. In both cases, I only played hands better than Jacks, never A K or AQ and always folded to raisers behind me even if I was ahead. I only played if I could isolate 1 on 1 against the maniac.

At first it seems great, because hey if you get a big pocket pair shove to isolate and you should expect to have anywhere from a 65% to 80% advantage against any random hands.

But still this means on average you lose about 1/3 to 1/4 of the time and given the variance, I would still rather be on a table where I can play actual poker, get reads on my opponent, etc.

He mostly just got lucky. If it's a really important tourney to you, and very early, you can sit back for a longer time before you "pounce" on him. You'd rather have a "made hand", of a mid-pocket pair or higher, but you can't always be sure that will come in time. But it sounded like this was happening to you right at the start of the tourney, and in that case you have many rounds you can sit and wait for even a better hand than AQ.

Another factor you need to consider, is that many times these type players will stop going allin once they have doubled up a couple times. If he literally keeps shoving EVERY hand, no matter what, then you know you will be ahead with AQ. However, you also know that if you wait a few more and get a mid-pair or better, then you will be even better off.

Plus, if it's a tourney that is important to you, then you might also NOT want to call his all in, especially if you might be only ahead 55%-45% or even 60%-40%. Because that 40-45% you would lose, even though in the long run it is a "good play", still does not mean it's the right play for THIS situation at the moment.
