It's only through playing many hands of poker that anyone becomes any good at it. There's just some things a book can't teach. Like, when you start to "get the feel" for when you have a bluff opportunity, or you're just being baited by a trapper. Similarly, experience will teach you the difference between someone who's raising on a great run of cards, versus someone who's treating you like a scared-y cat. You'll go through it all. Going all-in-all-in, teaching yourself the probabilities of that maneuver on a crude level. You'll test what it's like to be a calling station. You'll try to be a bully. You'll try to be a trapper. You will seek to deceive your opponents, bluffing when you've taught them to fear the legitimacy of your raises, springing the nuts when you've taught them you're just a bluffer. You'll learn that raising is not always the answer for high paint, that, sometimes, you're running cold, they know it, and you're out of position. You'll learn that even the coveted AA can lead to ruin, when you've hit a bad-beat streak (yes, bad-beats can come in streaks). In summary, you can count odds until the cows come home, and it is useful, but, there are many aspects of play that cannot be so easily quantified, which belong only to experience.

Whenever I learn a new form of poker or new variant, I always deal myself a few hands just to try to develop some sort of intuitive sense of the odds. In some csses, I could find the online, and in the long term that's the best way to go to learn optimal strategy for the game in question, but you're always gonna need that intuition for how frequently tha draw with come through or what range of opening hands you should be playing. Additionally in some variants, such as chowaha, there is very little data and the board is very complicated so just dealing yourself 10+ hands is a great way to start to get a feel without actually playing poker

Not sure what books you've read but I'm guessing they weren't particularly good ones.

I don't know about practice making perfect but maybe practice making better. If a ton of practice made perfect I would not still have those hands where I think to myself "What the hell was I thinking?" I make late runs just to make one bonehead move right before the money or right before the final table and big money.

Hi Greg.

I suggest that practice makes us better and on occasions perfect, the trouble is that others are playing and are seeking to play perfect poker as well. I understand that we play to get the feel of how to play in differing situations, which is a big part of the learning process in poker, however, some of us find it easier to read books while others like watching videos or U tube. We all having preferred methods and none of these are correct or incorrect, its just what suits.

If you are looking for some decent poker books to read I can suggest 4 or 5 great ones, but as there are plenty of posts on Cc, and I don't know anything about you or your experience level, I will leave you to find them for yourself. Gl with your learning, whichever method you choose. :D:D:D

Ive read books and try to play that way but I seem to do worse.I think playing thousands of hands is the best teacher.

I have personally watched a lot of videos and read articles but I agree that actually playing is the most effective use of my time right now.
