i'm reading a strategy book and the author says mastering these two techniques are crucial to improving your game? is it truly? I know it could be helpful but I don't know about making you a better player

I think it makes you a better player, but it's not the most important thing. I think the most important thing is the read of the situation, and the player.

Yes.....but I don't think it need be such a formal process and actually doing precise arithmetic work until you go back and analyse stuff when you are at higher levels...(combinametrics, range stoving etc.)...

A lot of people do this sort of intuitively by using logic(math is just logic by the way) and asking themselves about ranges and implied/pot odds during a hand.

I know I do....

So, the concepts ARE important...the super stringent math based process is not until you get high up in stakes imho.

This question should be qualified by whether you play online (assumed) or offline. To me, odds and EV are important but not "crucial" either way but online I would say BRM is more important than odds for sure on any given hand. Especially when you consider the algorythms applied to "induce" "fairness".

These principles are a very important part of a good game strategy. As with all poker advise, it should only be applied in certain situations. Take pot odds for example. Say you are in the BB and UTG raises 5x the BB. Lets also say there are 3 callers before you. If you have 7-2 off suit then pot odds of nearly 4:1 looks great but will probably only result in losing more chips. Now say you have A 10 suited which has a higher chance of winning a 4 way pot. All A 10 suited has to do is win one out 4 times in this spot to break even.

So, as for EV, 7-2 would have a lower EV in this situation and proabably shouldn't be a call (unless maybe you want to add in implied odds) and the higher EV of the A-10 hand with those pot odds may make the call closer to profitable in the long run.

ITT people don't understand pot odds and EV.

Yes, Pot odds and expected value are important. They are exactly as important as people say they are. Don't ignore them.
