A lame question perhaps, but I can't find anything online that gives me a definite answer about position in holdem.

Some sites show a 10-player diagram (max I play is 9) and say it's 3-4-3, others say 3-3-4. Those with 9 players say 3-3-3, 4-3-2...

Then of course if the players drop out/sit out, it changes again.

Is there a table anywhere that can show me exactly what position is what?

Thanks,

For 9 max I've always considered the first 2 positions after the blinds early, the next 3 middle, then CO and BTN.

I mainly play 9 seat & break it down in 4 sections.

I see you play at pokerstars and there they have a pokerschool you can join for free and all those little ?´s you may have that you may think are lame are and can be answered there. Also by joining the school and passing some tests you win entries in tournaments and better your knowledge about what position is good for calling raising or what effective stacks are and so on.

If you use holdem manager 2 then their positions are pretty much fixed EP, EP+1, EP +2 are early, MP, MP+1, MP+2, CO BTN SB & BB. I used to use other systems but as I review in HEM2 I found it really annoying having to readjust all the time as different books say different things. Obviously if you play 9 handed then just get rid of EP+2 from the equation. The other obvious thing is play less EP and more Late Position and find a decent blind strategy

Yeah I went through the pokerstars school stuff, that was 4,3,2, but I've seen differing ones hence the question. Funnily enough they said SB/BB were early position, which was weird? As I always thought it had the benefit of late position, and you've all posted it as part of late, and the pokerology charts do too!

Thanks! So it seems the general concensus is actually 2, 3, 4

..only preflop...once the flop hits they act before all others and are therefore "out of position"
...and they obviously have the disadvantage of already having "skin in the game" before they act...so they differ from "early position"...

hijack is the newest term for that position so if you are playing against more experianced players they may still be unadjusted to hijack

Hijack has been a very common name for the seat before the cutoff for as long as I can remember. At least 10 years.

Yeah it's been hijack forever, but as far as ranges are concerned I don't differentiate.

Yeah, i call it Hijack haha.

I dont think it matters massively what you call them etc, because in some books etc you will see the third or fourth seat described as early middle... Id recommend trying to get to grips with WHY position matters, and sound it out yourself... if that makes sense?!
