Hello my fellow opponents and poker players,

I'm happy to be one of your new members (see the introduction subcategory for my introduction post) and have spent portions of the day reading through the forums where I have seen truly great and useful threads and discussions.

What I would like to know from everyone of you is your tips on poker theory sources. Do you have any good recommendations of books, videos, movies/documentaries or anything else which illustrates or explains poker theory. I mostly play holdem but theory from other games or poker in general is most welcomed as well. Not only theory recommendations but also general tips from you and your experiences are most appreciated.

I look forward to future discussions with you!

Cheers and good luck in your games,

SadFacePanda

Maybe play different games with play money. I believe you should make your own theory above all. Otherwise, there are many little quizes on several pokersites that teaches you very well:cool:

Well, besides the strategy articles here in the forum, the intellipoker school of PS helped me a lot to firstly figure out, what I have to investigate more. Furthermore analyzing your own game (hand review) is indispensible, so you need some tracking software.

Thank you for the response! I do agree with you that building experience on your own and formulating "theory", knowledge and guidance based of your own experience usually is the best technique in every aspect of life. Therefore it shouldn't be any different in poker ;). I will have a look at the quizzes, thank you! What would you say is your best lesson you have learned based of your own experience?

I will definitely look out for the articles in the forum! The school at PS has caught my attention, will have to think about whether I'll actually join it. Glad that it helped you and that you recommend it. I wasn't aware there were any tracking softwares, but analyzing is something I do enjoy so will with no doubt try to fix that as soon as possible. Thank you for your response! :)

The best things I have used to help have been pokerstars Poker School Online, it gives some good reads with some tests after to test your knowledge, and also some free tickets to practice your skills. Books I have read are Doyle Brunson’s Super System 2, and Amarillo Slims Play Poker To win, that was my first poker book, and it had good stories, humour, and some strategy. I also listen to podcasts, my favourite one being Top Pair Home Game Poker Podcast. I really enjoy that one. Hope that helps

Welcome my friend. About the theory, yes, I could recommend your Pokerstars poker school. Now it depends on where you play poker. There, after all your courses, you have a test. Good luck with studying.

The underlying theory of how to play poker optimally is actually relatively simple. It is known as playing GTO- game theory optimal, and is a way of playing where it is impossible to beat you (the best you can do is break even against a player who were playing GTO). The theory shows the optimal number of bluffs compared to value bets depending on the size you bet, and the optimal amount of time you should call when someone gets based on their sizing. The hard part is then working out which hands should be in each of these ranges.

There are a lot of videos and articles on this, but my favourite is this one by Doug Polk. It’s a basic video but it’s very clear and explains it well.

GTO is solved only heads up. Look for Will Tipton Expert Heads up volume 1 and 2. This will improve your game

I think 3 Harrington volumes are important. They may have become old, but as they say "must read". And so watch the videoblogs of the tournaments in stages.

As I understand it, only heads up limit holdem has actually been solved but GTO concepts are applicable to all forms of poker. I think that the concepts are useful to learn as a basis for how you play and will give an understanding of how the theory behind poker works.

As a humor, as one professor said: "What are you telling me for the theory?" Give me two kings and I will beat anyone.

yes for no limit holdem these books are near gto. But are applicable on all forms of poker as after flop and future streets usually there are two players. I had read 20 poker books these two are the best

My theory: If you have 20 big blinds, do not rush to go all-in with medium hands or with an early position; Before you go in the all-in, think three times about the consequences.Good luck, experienced poker player. And remember, the god of poker watches your successes :D

Strategy articles on Cardschat, there you will find several interesting strategies that will enhance your knowledge significantly. I particularly like watching youtube videos with themes related to Poker. I like to watch good poker players in action, the way they play each hand. I consider myself a bad poker player because I know some theories and when it comes time to apply I can not. Sometimes you study subject matter and understand the same, but when it comes time for you to apply the strategy is difficult. I think of everything I've ever studied, poker boils down to this: Fold without pity, do not be afraid to risk, be happy with defeat and know that your time will come. Good luck on the tables.
