Hi guys I am new to this forum. I was just wondering if anyone has any tips for picking up tells when you are playing online as opposed to live. I find that I can sometimes pick up tells on people when I am playing live, but when I play online this seems almost impossible to me. Any responses will be greatly appreciated.

Ignore timing tells.

Pay attention to betting patterns and player tendencies.

What i do sometimes is search the player up, and if he is playing multiple tables at once, he is most likely not changing up his betting patterns. Therefore you if u play with him for long enough you figure out how he bets.
i hope that helps

take note and concentrate on his betting patterns. Is he a straightforward player meaning does he bet strong hands on the flop all the time or does he check strong hands ? or vice versa, or both? What is he betting with TP OP or those qunitessential hands?

Like others have said, there are tons of false online tells. The main thing to look at is betting patterns. Notice how much they are betting when they bluff, have a drawing hand, have the nuts, etc. If you pay close attention to this and take well documented notes, you'll start to be able to use them agains your opponents.

For example, if you know villian always raises 3.5xBB pre-flop and this time it was only 2.5x, pay attentiong. Watch how the hand unfolds and if you see what he showed down take a note. He may like doing that when he is on the button with AA. He may do that with his Rag hands. Whatever the case may be, it gives you information that you can use against him later on.

It is more about betting patterns than it is tells when playing online. Because you can't see your opponents you have to rely on betting patterns and players' tendancies to decide whether or not they have a hand.

An easy way to tell if they are multi-tabling is by how long they are taking to play. If they frequently use most of their time or time out on occasion just to sit right back in they probably arent concentrating too much on one table.

i loved that article. Bonomo and haxton were going back and forth. I dont really think screennames are tells....the only way the could be i guess is fish in their names and pictures of babies. But other than that i really dont think those are online tells at all

Extract from article • Players with a name and a bunch of numbers afterward tend not to be very good. For example, "Tony743624" is most likely a novice player

You cant base a screen name as random as that as a fact they are a novice. My nic is eamesy4980 lol.

Seriously my nic was eamesy4980 for 5 years obvs cant change it so to say someones still a novice is very presumptious. I was a novice at time i made nic but thats only because eamesy wasnt available. You could play with somone who created a nic years ago. They become very experienced and you presuming they are bad then they will take your money because you have played differently against them presuming they an amateur. Also timing as this article says is mainly for high stakes 1 tablers. If multi tabling timing is irrelevant. They are playing numerous tables. I bet at diff speeds mainly because im sipping a drink and taking me longer to hit button. You cant presume timing and nics are sign of tells, it could become very costly. Im in hand i have big hand, a guy bets, my phone rings i have to answer expecting an important call, pots half my stack so i just go all in then go answer phone, guy calls i take pot with monster unawar as on phone. Come back and few hands later get a hand, playing it pot gets quite big, again half my stack, phone rings again its not my turn so i go answer landline. I come back having wasted most of my time button i go all in. Now this a tell that im bluffing?? so guy with half decent hand gunna call, last time went all in it was str8 away. You cnat base judgments on time because you dont know what the guy is doing, he could be running to toilet with bad dairohea or answering an important phone call. Only tells in online poker is chat, and how they play poker.

i find the best time to decide what kind of players ur up against in the beginging of any game. Luck players are easy to spot early and if u note them u will know there range of hands leter in the tourney. vice-versa for stronger players who normally dont get involved early.

I heard that if you are in a cash game you can tell a lot about the aggressiveness of a player if they wait or do not wait for the blinds to come around.

Just look at betting pattern and see over a period of time of how there playing their big hands like trapping or just over betting them. If their multi tabling then their betting pattern are going to change.

What are you talking about, this makes absolutely no sense, it really is not an aggression thing, it is stupid to post your blinds before they come to you when you join a new table.

I've got a fairly decent list of them & is stuff that will come to you over a period of time... where it'll just become intuitive. Besides, I can't tell all... I mean.. what would be the point? I gotta keep my edge (it's not a freebie, lol).

I would say, you have to look what he shows on a showdown and how he play it. Did he raise or check a draw or a monster. Is he often bluffing, or does he play only good hands. How is his handrange to call or raise.

That's my point. If someone comes to a new table and posts UTG+1 or 2, they probably have the patience of a 18 year old porn star.

But do they suck as much as one? ;)

if you want to isolate a player, analyze a hand where they make it to a showdown and review how he bet/called/took time. most likely they'll perfrom the same way

The only thing I use online is the players stats. It is very difficult to pick up on other things such as taking time to call as if they are thinking etc.

I find that pausing for 4-5 seconds before I check the flop when i've missed seems to get me a free card sometimes... When I quick check I seem to be raised more.
