Hey all I'm new to Cardschat and I have a question about which blinds I should play in online poker.

If I have $100 starting bankroll, can I play at the NL10 tables? Is 10 buy-ins enough to begin with for someone that understands ABC poker.

Thank you for your help with this.

Hi Joe, if your new to online poker i certainly wouldn't suggest starting with only 10bi's at any level, 20 is considered an aggro brm even at the lower levels at 2 & 5nl and in general as you move up you should have a bigger cushion in your br.

Granted if you want to cut your teeth on cash and don't mind redepositing as you are learning to beat the level then by all means you could start there. Good Luck in whatever your choice is.

A general rule of BRM as laid out by Chris Ferguson ( who knows how to maintain a BR clearly) Is to only have 5% of your total BankRoll on any one buy in at a time. So take your 10NL and x20 should = your initial deposit should be $200.
Another thing he notes is that whenever you have 10% or more at the table (of your total BR) you are supposed to leave.
Hope these little tidbits help, if for nothing else but to give you another resource to check out.

Personally I like to follow my 1% rule.

Basically, 100$ Bankroll, I would play 1$ buy in.

But that is just me, and I like it safe :)

Yeh but that is more for tourneys than cash.

Either way, good luck!

I would suggest you to play 2nl as a beginner that is the best way to begin which suits your bankroll nicely. Once you reach 250 $ then you can move one level up and play 5 nl so give yourself that time as cash games online can be tough for a beginner. So see how it goes and good luck. :slug:

With $100, look for the smallest stake (cash game) and smallest buyin (tournament) there is.

Have to divide our BR into small chunks to enjoy it.

Play freerolls and NL2. Or lose all the money. NL10 is a game not to bankroll.

If you are new to online poker, start at the smallest stakes and proove yourself to be a winner there before moving up.

What tenbob says sums it up well. I play mainly micro tourneys; I'll sometimes splurge and play a $3-5 buyin if I win/place $8-10 or more. But even then you have to watch yourself. What's beneficial in that is you get a feel of the type of (often) higher quality players that play $5+ tourneys.

50 buy ins bro, you should start at 2NL, did the exact same thing you suggest when I started, jumped into 20NL and only had about 5buy ins, was terrible and blew my bankroll in a matter of minutes. Learn the game slowly and prove to be a consistent winner at a stake and then when you're rolled for the next level move up which in your case would be $250 for 5NL.

The options have pretty well been discussed above, but I'll add my thoughts too.

Let's say you only deposit $100, and decide to play 10NL. What happens if you lose it all? Will you deposit more? Will you give up? Is $100 a significant investment for you?

If you can easily deposit more if you lose, then by all means play 10NL. If losing it all in a couple games is too much, then start at a lower level like 2NL.

One last thing: don't think of it as ABC poker. If you consider it as routine, then you are prone to becoming exploitable. The basics are important to understand, but you must always treat each situation uniquely and adapt, even at low limits.

how would this translate to # buy-ins...not total %. i don't necessarily follow the 5% of total br rule as i'm more conservative with my brm.

Here is a fairly and conservative basic bankroll management (BRM) table that will help you determine when you should move up and need to move back down stakes. If you want to improve your game, check out my micro stakes study group community, www.microgrinder.com that we just launched.

When you hit 30 buy-ins at your current level, move-up. If you go on a 2 buy-in downswing when taking a shot at the next level, move back down:
  • 5NL: Move up to 10NL at $150
  • 10NL: Move up to 25NL at $300
  • 25NL: Move up to 50NL at $750

Am not a cash game player, but was taught and read when learning the game that whatever level you wish to play, you should have a minimum of 100 BB behind you..

Bankroll Management

What strategy do you use to manage your bankroll? I personally will only buy into cash games with around 5% and mt tournaments about 1-2%. If my bankroll is big enough I usually cash out about 10-20% a month. I am curious of how other people manage there bankroll and how long they've had it. The longest bankroll I had was about 1 year and i played mostly 25-50 cent stake cash games.

It all depends, I beat this limit or not. For example for my playing limit in MTTSNG, enough for me only 30-40bi, almost zero chance that I will lose all.. For the new limit of course need more bankroll around 100-200bi depending on turbo or regspeed.... In a cash game the same situation you are regular or not this limit, will depend your bankroll management.

BRM tips

I need some advice on basic bank roll management. I got second place in one of the Carbon $2 tourneys last week and took about $250. So my bankroll went up quite a bit. The temptation is to start playing higher stakes games (say $10 or $15 buy-ins), but that can eat through a bankroll pretty quickly. What kind of rules do you guys normally use for cash games, tourneys and sit-n-gos? Do you only play tourneys where you can do 20x the buy-in, 10x the buy-in, 30x the buy-in? Do you have a rule for cash games? I usually play the .05/.10 cash games with a $4 buy-in, but sometimes will play .10/25 with a $10 buy-in with a larger bankroll. Should I look at playing anything higher? How about sit-n-gos?

People often think poker is just playing cards at the table, but there is many more parts in poker. One of them is bankroll managament. It is one of the keys to succes in poker. Here is a video from twitch streamer Jaime Staples about Bankroll Management. Hope it helps.

30 buyins is a rule many follow when attempting to aggressively move up in stakes. It does require quite a bit of discipline to move down after, as Hardin suggests, a 2 buyin downswing, but following this type of strict BR management often leads to higher stakes play at a much faster pace.

Not everyone has such discipline, but then again, learning and reinforcing such discipline is a great poker skill :)

Great video. I have so far avoided jumping up in stakes and am keeping my bankroll at about what it was after the second place finish last week.

Think you should have 20 or more buyins, unless you dont mind depositing again

the other thing you can do is supplement freerolls in to help you build/maintain the bankroll
