Success is generally a good idea, but even the best can have downswings for period, so in the short term success isnt an end all tell. Base it on your thought process throughout each hand. Do you have a reason for making each move you make? Are you putting opponents on ranges, thinking about what your range looks like, what your opponents is trying to represent, etc? If your making the correct thought process on hands, playing optimally, and adjusting to your opponent success will eventually come.

A lot of players go by Sklansky's theory and system and they reward themselves with Sklansky dollars, even when they lose. It's amazing how many Poker players have thousands of Sklansky dollars but are lifelong losers of real money, lol.

I personally like rewarding myself with real money, ;) To each their own.

One par to improvement is that your thought processes will change. Not always huge changes; especially after you've been playing a while, they tend to be more evolutionary. So if you think of more possibilities and/or think deeper into them, that's an indicator of possible improvement.

Another obvious one is reading your opponents more accurately, such as being able to put them on narrower hand ranges, being able to classify them better, etc.

One thing that I've noticed after playing for a long time the do I:

Call?
Raise?
Fold?

questions aren't really questions anymore, they're just actions. Though if I stop to think about why I'm doing something, I've committed to the correct course of action.

In Perspective,

Try to analyse your game!
It is not important if you win or loss...
You will loose many times even if you played correctly.
Read books try to analyse your hands!

Its hard to measure success, to be honest if you're making money and tilting less and less... then you're getting better.
