Aside from having winning sessions, what type of goals should a beginning poker try to obtain? For example, to be more aggressive when in position or play better post flop. One of eventual goals are to play in a few tournaments and become more adept at putting people on a range of hands.

A good goal for beginners is simply to improve to the point where you can crush the games at the stake you are playing. Developing solid hand reading skills is an important part of improving.

So what is considered to be crushing the games? A high winrate? Is there a $$ amount associated with this?

Yeah if you're playing cash games you are crushing if you have a good win-rate over a significant sample, or if you are playing tourneys have a good ROI over a significant sample. ROI and winrate are linked to money of course but I think it is better not to focus on the money but instead how well you are playing compared to your opponents.

So what should be a good measuring stick to gauge how I am progressng? I've only been playing live roughly since July. So about January (6 months) should be a good timeframe?

For cash games 50k - 100k hands would be enough to be fairly certain you are actually winning and not just running hot. That doesn't mean you should necessarily play that many at each level though. If you have the bankroll to move up after only playing 20k hands at a level then it's better to shot take at the next level than carry on grinding just to 'prove' you can beat a level.

I can only play live games since I am a US based player.

Then, it's going to take you a very long time to play 50k hands :)

If I were you I would stick $50 on Bovada and play the micro tables, the huge increase in volume you will achieve doing this will give you experience, which should help a lot when you go to the casino.

Definitely didn't know that Bovada was a legal US site! Will have to check this out!

Yes Bovada, Americas Cardroom and I think BlackChip Poker as well are sites US players can deposit money on and do it legally.

There is also carbon which is the merge network, lock which is revolution (although we all know the issues they are having) intertops (although its invite only or something like that) and not sure but juicystakes also I do believe, which was recently sold and is now a side by side skin with intertops in regards to them not segragating from each other as they do from lock.

I stand to be corrected if wrong on the juicystakes as not from US but the revolution network seems to have sites with access for US on which is JuicyStakes so in the wrongful event of making An aSS of U and ME this is my assumption :D

Edit. I should indicate of them all bovada would probably be my recommendation as well if you can deal with playing against #'s and the whole anonymous thing.

Didn't know that America's CardRoom was a pay site either. I've been playing on there and poker stars for a while now.

+1, I was trying to find that link and couldn't for the life of me. thanks anderson.

Thanks for the list! Just started playing on Bovado. Aside from everyone being "anonymous" the site works fine for what I need it do which is to learn how to see alot of different hands and to play the game for smaller stakes before moving up. Might start multi-tabling soon to build up the bankroll some (those .35 cents pot don't come around too often).

I see that there are goals to set and to improve, these goals that improve your game can really sure up your game to be in the process of becoming a winning player. My question is, where is it that I can find some good videos to increase my hand reading skills? What are some types of plays that people make that give away their weakness or strength?

My goal when I started was to just keep playing sit n go's and build a bankroll
I had near no experience playing online 4 years ago and some how built a bankroll upto just under 1k
but obviously not knowing bankroll management I went broke going into like $2-4 cash not knowing any different.

I think 2 good goals for you or anyone beginning would be -
1. developing your post flop game for cash you definately need to have an idea on what ranges.

2. Just getting comfortable in all area's of your game so if your struggling on aggressive players get comfortable dealing with that.

Oh and nothing beats online commentary tutorials for improving your game learning a solid range
