poker coach

hi all,
anybody using (or ever used) a poker coach.
how does it work ?
what do they do ?
has anyone improved there game using a coach ?
are they worth it ?
any general info (story's) about poker coaching welcome.

I have been coached and now coach myself. Coaching sessions are normally done via skype and using a screen sharing program like teamviewer or mikago. Usually its a sweat session (coach watches student play and comments) or database analysis.

I think coaching is a fantastic way to improve your game. But make sure you do your research first on who you are hiring.

It varies drastically - depending on who you hire, what you are being coached on, etc.

Having a coach improved my game drastically - I was coached on sng's initially then we switched to mtt's which I am better suited for.

Cost me $75 per session and I've had like 10 so its cost me 750, but as you can see i'm not regretting it, I would have lost that + more if I never did it, and yes we usually do it with skype and i chose to do my first sessions as a sweat he'd watch my game and at the end he'd tell me what he seen he didnt like, then after that in future sessions i marked hands from sessions I had difficulty with, we went through them together via hem replayer, he filmed the sessions for me to look over again and i just kept studying the videos until I got the information he was telling me.

Yes - we used Skype and teamviewer. I was coached for about 8-9 months I think - though the last few months were sporadic and mostly just touching up.

My coach was excellent - others here have used him. Honestly - he charged very varied fees based on how much coaching you planned on getting and what stakes you played and sometimes even what you could afford. I don't even feel it is appropriate to publicly post a rate when yours could vary so drastically from mine one way the other.

I can say it was less than Checkraise paid for most of his students.

Coaching is great but IMO it's not worth it at the lower stakes - maybe for 50NL and upwards, but until then you can easily improve your game a ton just by playing, watching videos and analysing your own hand histories. Also the higher you play, the easier it is to recoup the money you have spent on coaching through profits. $50 an hour for 5NL coaching is 10BI an hour, but $150 an hour at 50NL is just 3BI and you'll be getting better coaching because you are paying more

and carry on educating myself as time permits.

Read your blog. Although the content is really good i'm confused by why you'd want to play so much at 2NL?

oh dw I see you have a lot of hands at 100NL. Even so, whats up with all the 2NL play?

Coaching is definitely worth it. My coach and I would analyze my hands and go through different concepts which helped a lot.

However, don't get a coach if you're a new player. You don't need to pay a really good player to teach you the basics of poker, there's plenty of free (and good) material out there that can do that for you. Get a coach when you have a good foundation and want to improve on leaks that you might not even know about

Coaching is worth it if you can afford it. Give it a go if you got the cash. Also, consider some of the training software options that are available like Leak Buster. It wont hold your hand like a coach will, but you can get a lot of bang for you buck. You just have to make sure you put in the time.

Also, make sure you do a thorough research of the coach. There are a lot of losing players doing coaching now.

can anybody set themselves up as a poker coach ?

If you're a micros player a sub to DC, DTB, BF or CR is probably better value for money.

having a grasp for the fundamentals is probably the best thing first, however I would recommend people to get coached when they move up to 50nl since the game is almost akin to 100nl games in my opinion. and there is a quite a big skill gap between 25nl -50nl (these days it never used to be though) a coach is worth every penny, my coach is discobisco drag the bar coach, he's very good at explaining hand concepts very well, really if any one is struggling save up for a session and see what you think, you'd be suprised how much you can learn in an hour.

We also have a couple coaches on this forum. Personally I had been coached by ChuckTs who really opened my eyes when it came to playing poker

Ya but Chuck wont coach you unless you play 25nl+.

Which makes sense since you probably shouldn't even need to invest in a coach till 50nl
