Lets say pocket pairs under jacks pre flop. How do you play these and why. Im a relative ameteur and this decision seems to be the most difficult to me.

just limp in see if you can catch trips, if not there will most likeyly be over cards and if someone raises it just fold. if the blinds are high late in a tourny either fold or go all in if you have a short stack.

it depends on the game your playing and your position at the table. In general dead homie advice is good. limp in and try to flop a set. He called them trips but that is not the same as a set. A set is when you have three of a kind and its hidden because you hold two of the three in your hole cards. Trips is when one of your whole cards matches two board cards exp.. 56 on a 55J flop is trips and 88 on a 38K flop is a set. gl

Out of position, limp. In position, Raise. That's how I play em.

Pocket jacks isn't the right cutoff, pocket nines and tends are considered a premium hand. The question you proposed might be better if the cut off was nine's. Also we would need to know what kind of poker you were playing, multi table tournaments, single table tournaments, cash.

If the table is playing tight then a min raise or 2x raise may not be a bad idea. Especially if you are stacked enough that it won't hurt you if someone comes over the top and you decide to fold. One thing this can do is let you know where you are in the hand vs the blinds. 10-10 in the hole on a 2-5-9 rainbow flop doesn't look as good when the blinds were able to limp in. This advise, like most advise, is situational and should be taken accordingly.

If I'm the first to act, I raise 2.5 to 3x BB. If someone else has limped in ahead of me, I'll call the limp. If someone has raised ahead of me, I will still call most of the time. If there is a reraise in front of me, I may fold small pocket pairs - depending on my read of the reraiser, stack size, etc.

It depends on various factors and combinations thereof, so there's no single pat answer. Against certain types of opponents, you may well want to play differently than against others. Table position is another consideration; in earlier seats, it's not out of the question to fold small pairs, especially at tables where limpers usually get raised.

Out of position, limp (depends of bet value, of course). Dealer, raise in max 3bb. SM, BB: 2bb

Is that wrong?

Other things to consider might be what is your table image? Are you close to the bubble? How many BBs do you have? What are the other players at the table doing? Position, ie are you on the button? You only catch trips very very rarely so those pocket tens are at their strongest pre flop. Has someone already raised? There are a lot of other factors as well but hopefully this covers some of the thought process when you get pps. Good luck.
