Idk if this is the right, place to ask this. But I was just playing a little tavern hosted game, by worldtavernpoker and I had pocket 2s and the flop was J,8,J ... Now, is this possible or can it be explained to me? Apparently, I lost a heads up because the 8 canceled out the pocket 2s? Or something like that....

The only way the board would of cancel out the 2's if another pair came out on the board. What was the rest of the hand?

Not a big deal, but having a higher pair on the board render your lower pair worthless is called counterfeiting, not canceling. In your example, you lose if your opponent has a pocket pair higher than your 2's, or if he holds an 8 or if the turn or river are higher than a 2 & he has a matching hole card, giving him a higher pair. If 2 pair show on the board then you play the board as any 5th card is higher than your 2. If your opponent has a hole card higher than the 5th card on the board he wins. If neither of his hole cards are higher than the 5th card on the board, then you split the pot as you both have the same hand. Clear as mud? :)

Ooooooooh wow, I can't believe I missed that. Thank you very much! Yup exactly clear as mud, like the one I work in lol

Edit: I think he had an 8, but I couldn't see or hear over everyone so that's the only thing that makes sense.

Based on what they explained to you I am guessing another 8 or another pair hit the board and the other person won with a shared two pair and a better kicker.

Yeah that's what happened, now that I think about it. That's why I'm staying away from low pocket pairs 'till I learn how to play with them.

Thanks everyone, you guys are awesome

The best way for someone new to think of nl poker hands is to remember at showdown poker is the best five card hand example your hole cards QJ, board AAA, A, J. your opponent's hole cards KQ. Your best five card hand is AAAA, Q kicker your opponents best hand is AAAA, K kicker your opponent wins. In the situation you mentioned as explained in other post if the board is for example JJ8, 3, 8 your 22 is pretty much worthless because your best hand is JJ88, 3 kicker if your opponent is holding a terrible 45 he still wins because his best hand is JJ88, 5 kicker.

Just a perfect example.
I used to just get confused with things like this until i figured out the golden rule: Showdown is always best 5 cards.

Here is an example that just happened to me a few minutes ago My KK gets counterfeited on the turn :( Luckily it happened in a 55 cent buyin and it didn't hurt :)
