Play at the lowest level you can find and deposit a small amount and go from there. Different games suit different people so try a few variations until you find the game that you like best.

Agree. Also rememeber getting good at poker takes tremendous patience . Start off small and see how it goes. Also try to read up and watch some videos , it will help improve. Good luck and have fun

If I were you I would join pokerstars pokerschool and watch videos of pros playing in tables and participate in training before I jump into the tables. when you start playing I would play at 0,01/0,02 and don't move from there until you have profits on a 50k hand sample

A beginner should start with micro sng´s, the easiest form of poker to learn and play. There are many good ressources about it in the interwebs.

Welcome to CC. As matiusaa recommended, sign up with PSO and learn the basics. You'll find it under Poker School TAB when you login to PS.

As a beginner, you can learn from many players. They don't have to be big-name pros. They just have to be reasonably better than you are.

And you should focus on training that's appropriate to your level. At the entry and even intermediate levels, it seldom matters how top pros use advanced thinking and plays against their higher-level opponents since your opponents don't think or play like theirs do.

As for maximizing profit, learn to play a decent winning game first.

Others have said it well: just be patient, focus on fundamentals, and practice discipline.

You also need to understand that while you're learning, it's practically impossible to be profitable outside of luckboxing a big tourney win (which bad/losing players can sometimes do). That's okay, just embrace it and consider it an investment in your future. As I'll point out below, do not consume yourself with profits, there's a more important goal you should be striving for. And as has been said, don't play higher stakes than you can afford, because you can expect to load and reload multiple times while you figure things out. I'd also suggest avoiding trying to "build from zero" by playing freerolls like a lot of beginners start out with. It's certainly possible, but it's a highly frustrating variance nightmare that can distract you from developing a proper poker mindset. Just deposit what you can afford to lose and get on with your game.

To add to what's been suggested, here's some other beginner tips and pitfalls to be wary of:
  • Don't be results oriented. Success at poker is measured over the long term. Short term results are irrelevant. Don't get caught up on bad beats or coolers. It's poker, they happen. Regularly. Get used to it. Variance is a bitch (especially in MTTs) and you'll never avoid it, so learn to understand it.
  • At the micro stakes you'll be starting out with, a lot of plays you'll face will make no sense. YOUR goal is to make the correct decisions for the given situation, no matter the outcome or what other players should or should not do.
  • On that note, do NOT make the unfortunately common boneheaded mistake that a lot of beginning online players make, namely to blame results on rigged theories rather than standard variance or bad plays. I cannot stress this enough. Almost nothing will retard (swidt?) your progress like being a rigtard.
  • Beginners often think the goal is to win/make money. No, the goal is to make correct decisions. When you learn to do that consistently, the profits will come automatically over the long term.
  • Post interesting or questionable HH's here in the appropriate analysis forums. Wear a thick skin and listen to the (sometimes blunt) responses you'll get from experienced players. In particular, there can be multiple "correct" ways to play a given hand, but in general when you get a consensus telling you how you butchered a hand, they're probably right and you should listen to them. Don't be overly defensive like some who post hands and then get offended at the feedback. Also, unfortunately you're likely to get feedback from people as clueless as you, so again look for consensus as you learn to separate the wheat from the chaff.
  • On that note, almost all beginners think they're better than they are. Try not to fall into that trap and understand that even seasoned players always have something to learn. Listen more and argue less.
  • BRM is absolutely essential to your success once you're on a profitable path. While learning and losing, not so much, so don't get too caught up with it starting out. Just know that you'll need to plan to invest whatever it takes to get the hang of the stakes you're playing.

You may want to start with reading "No Limit Hold 'em: Theory and Practice" by David Sklansky and Ed Miller. Then move on "Harrington on Cash Games."

LB that is not the way we treat newcomers here, guy at least want to learn and when he post a tread he is kind enough to respond back when we post to him, unlike some other new people who only make tread and asks questions just for the sake of posting and building post count, i have to say i exchange some PM with this guy, he really wants to learn, don't chase him away...

cheers!!!

The support here is just over the top..

Everything i will learn just because of you and other people on this forum is just truly amazing!

Youtube is your friend.

Daniel Negreanu has a lot of video's to learn from

Here are some shows to enjoy watching while learning:

High Stakes Poker season 1-6 : It's a fun show to watch Gabe Kaplan and AJ Benza are very funny together (commentators) and Gabe Kaplan can be very informative.

The Big Game: Another fun show, Joe Stapleton (commentator) is great to learn from very informative, explains the math very well and explains everything very well. Plus for enjoyment aspect he is also funny

EPT Events: Joe Stapleton does commentary on these as well (I'd recommend the ones with Liv Boeree at the tables.

for online videos

Phil Galfond a great player to learn from he has a lot of commentary on his play.

Daniel Negreanu 2013 player of the year: Has some commentary videos as well

Don't forget to read books :

Doyle Brunsons Super System 1 & 2

Phil Hellmuth "Play poker like the pros" - great for learning tight ABC poker

Daniel Negreanu - has books ranging from amateur to advanced

Important: don't mistake short-term luck for skill. Sometimes you will get a hot run of cards that makes it seem like you've got it all figured out, then all of a sudden you've lost everything you made and then some, especially if you try to move up in stakes sooner than you should.

Also, I see a lot of newer players make the mistake (made it many times myself and still do) of thinking that the better hand pre-flop deserves to win and going on tilt when it doesn't. Even if you make the right decisions on every street you can still lose all your chips, the important point is to realize that over the long term if you're making the right decisions you will show a profit. Your opponents can and will get rewarded for making mistakes at your expense, this is part of poker so you have to learn to accept it. At the same time, sometimes you will make a mistake on a hand and get rewarded handsomely for it. This doesn't mean that it's not a mistake, over the long term making this same play in this situation will cost you more than you gain.

Experience is also key, there are so many possible situations in every hand that no book or video can cover everything. Play as many hands as you can, and at the same time monitor and study your play so that you aren't making the same mistakes over and over. You will find that many lessons you read and see won't really start to stick until you've faced a similar situation with your chips at risk.

If you stick to playing just premium hands like any pocket pair above 10s or AK to A10, you will end up saving alot of money. At least until you get a feel for the game and can start playing lesser hands in position.
