Playing 'out of position' means you have to make the decision before your opponent. If you look at poker statistics, you'll see that you can play and win more hands when you're in the final table positions. Having a position on your opponents is very important. Playing a hand in position (be sure of the difference between absolute and relative position) gives you an advantage over your opponent. However, you will also throw many hands out of position. You can have, for example, AK under the gun, raise the bet in 4x the big blind and get paid by the cutoff and the player on the button. After the flop is revealed, you will be the first to act. This means that your opponents can base their decisions after their action.
