I am a total newbie and have considered playing online for free just to get some hands in without losing money. My question is: are there places on the poker sites that teach how to use the site in a mechanical sense? I've never been to one and am feeling a bit daunted about the level of difficulty in using the site. I'm sure it's not rocket science, but I don't want to play even for free without knowing what to click on for what...and so on. Thanks for your help.

are you on about the lobby? can be daunting with all the different options at first, but just take your time to explore and get a feel for it, no rush to jump into games right away. good luck!

Hey Jake,

The best way of navigating an online poker room for the first time is to go to the "play money" tables, have a seat, and play some hands. Get familiar with the buttons, the options, etc. at no risk to you.

Once you do that, and you have specific questions, let us know what they are ;)

I play on a lot of different sites, and although my poker might be scratchy I have a pretty good understanding for the "mechanics" of all of them. The first thing I do when I get onto a new site is find the cheapest of the following and buy in:

  • Reg Cash Game - normally the $2NL table
  • Zoom/Rush [Or variant] Cash Game
  • SNG - $0.50 heads up if I can find it
  • MTT - either a freeroll or perhaps a $0.10 turbo tournament or something.

All up I get a good feel for the whole site and different games I might be playing. With the cash games I test things like the notes facilities, how well I can multi-table, etc., and it's also good to get to know the dynamics of the Zoom style games. SNG/MTT's are also extremely helpful as it gets you used to finding all the little things you might want during any future tournament (prize pool, levels, stack sizes, etc.).

Just my 2c :) Good luck on the virtual felt

You are right its not rocket science. Many sites are build the same way so when you know how to use one of them others are pretty much the same.

When you use lobby you have to learn the filters. Buyin size type of poker select how many players on table in tournament etc. It is all standard and you will learn it very fast.

At the tables you also meet the same possible choice on every site fold call raise raise 4BB raise allin etc.

So just use the rooms and you will be a champ soon

I was asking which site, cause I have played a number of the bigger ones. But most - if not all - relevent points have been covered. Just open any site and go to play money tables and go for it. You have nothing but play chips to lose, and those are always available for a top up.

seems like the technology has moved on and you haven't been able to keep up with it which is why it is proving to a daunting task to which is as easy as child's play. I would advice you to not be shy. I get it that you are not familiar with it but try and be adventurous about it. Try and explore it, all it takes really is reading whats written and clicking it. Click something and see what happens, nothing dangerous or harmful is going to happen. If you explore it i promise you will learn to manage it very quickly. Go on now, you can do it.
