I have a BR of around $40 and wanted to try my hand at playing the smallest cash games on Stars ($0.01/$0.02) I know I need a lot more than $40 but that's all I have for the moment, any advice? thanks :p

I'm in the same boat as you my friend. I'm a college student working a part time job and I love card games like Magic The gathering and of course Texas Holdem. First time attempting online poker so we'll see where it goes.

Plenty of money for those games. The big thing about small stakes is escaping the rake suck that cuts significantly into your win rate, and that doesn't happen until after $50NL or so.

My experience suggests that starting out with sit and goes, exercising discipline and avoiding high variance situations nearly always all but guarantees you top 5 in a sit and go. The edge is going to be huge as well in lower stakes sit and goes because 20%+ of the field is completely clueless or will shove all-in early with anything decent (only being called by better or by a very bad player with worse).

So you have the bankroll for cash games, and that's cool, but if you want to move up quicker with that small amount of money, I suggest sit and goes, building your bankroll up high enough to get the full amount of a deposit bonus from another poker client, going there, rinsing and repeating.

With $40, you have to play the smallest stake you can find.

You have to observe strict BRM.

Would you say 180 sit n go's? I know grisped.com actually touched on that at one point.

Actually learning to be strict with your money and learning the importance of it... is one of the first steps of becoming an okay player, the next step is finding the best ways to invest on your winnings.

If you are a limit holdem player the smallest limit micro stakes there could be ok. Lots of donks there though so try just playing good starting hands.

Also suggests that starting out with sit and goes 6max 12-18 players, guarantees you top 3 or 4 in a sit and go. Can take a chance in the game cache with 25% of the stack. But the risk is the risk. Do not play the all stack. In any case, good luck!

If presumably you can afford to lose that $40 then no problem. I started with less but if I had lost it, it wouldn't have been a problem and i could've just redeposited.

For me, that's a good BR to have to play at those stakes. And when you win enough to move to 5NL, I would. I only had $50 when I started playing at Full Flush and I started at the lowest stakes. And now and then I would throw in a low buy in MTT. GL at all your tables.

Patience is key

Hah I remember doing the same thing. the one thing you should keep in mind is that the only way you're going to have much success with this is by being very patient. I know it's tempting to want to go all in on a decent hand to do a quick double up, but unless you know 100% that you can't loose the hand, it's also a great way to loose all your cash fast. Someone once told me that a good poker player folds like 80% of their hands, and I've come to believe that's true. Play smart, not fast, and you can turn the minimum bankroll into lots of cash!

Exercise good bankroll management. I have been a great player but always play above my means. hence i never win in the long run.

If you buy-in with 50BB ($1) then you have 40 buy-ins... this could help avoid bigger swings.

40 buy ins is fine. A little tougher to play MTTs with such a small bankroll, though.

Utilize any free rolls to satisfy your MTT desires with the potential to add to your bankroll!

I would have to agree with the freerolls, the sit n go's, and the switching to earn bonuses over and over. Playing patiently, and expecting a fair outcome 80% of the time are keys to keeping small-ball profitable. Just don't get mad when your BR gets up to $100 and you go to a higher stakes cash game and your aces are cracked by a donkfish and you're back down. No stress, just progress.

If you're playing cash, think first before every action. Every decision is EV based.

I only say this because I still have my dumb moments where I make donkey calls. For example earlier today I called a big value sized river bet with King high flush on a double paired board. My brain was blinded by my flush when I should of snap folded because literally the board was paired not once... but TWICE.

So what I'm getting at, tight ABC poker will help you advance quickly out of the 2-10NL levels.

I would play 1 2 cent for a few thousand hands then move to 2-5 until my roll was 50 dollars then i would move to 5-10 cent and at 100 dollars move to 10-20 cent...25 cent
