I don't know if this has another name, but I call it a playing budget. It's an arbitrary amount that I decide, if I go over this amount, I can play loose with the chips over that amount. For instance, I set a 2500 budget on a tourney. If I get to 3000, it gives me 500 to play loose and do whatever I want with. As the tourney progresses, my budget will increase to accommodate for the increase blind levels. Playing a budget like this can allow you to mix up your play without risking your tournament life.

This is a flawed way of looking at tournaments. It actually doesn’t matter what you’ve won or lost, especially in the early stages where ICM pressure is not much of a factor. You should focus on the profitability of each hand regardless of how many chips you have, and shouldn’t punt chips just because they’re chips you’ve won. The idea of preserving your tournament life is also irrelevant at the early stages of the tournament. Again, if a play is profitable you should be making it and if it isn’t you shouldn’t.

I make enough mistakes in my game to "mix up my play". If I start allocating additional chips for a crazy game, I suspect that the number of bad decisions will increase and exceed any acceptable limits.

I chose this strategy in former times while playing on gamble machines,
As your quesiton already indicates, you obviously set a mark for a certain amount which you "dont care about because its free", well actually thats the worst attitude to have while gambling, since you lose the kinda feeling of the game in my opinion and from my xp I can say.

i think yer looking at it wrong myself, position and table dynamics dictate play,if yer at a loose playing table tighten up if yer at tight table loosen up -i understand what yer saying just think yer looking at it the wrong way, chip stack has very little to do with style of play
