Hi I am new the the forums and I had a question about a hand that I have played couple of days a go. It was during a 1-2 nl session and I was sitting at SM I had 8H8C after 4 players limped in the button raised it to $12. I call and BB and 2 of the limpers call. Flop 5d 8d 3d I hit the top set and I check and check all around and the button bets $35 I call and bb calls and rest fold Turn 10c I check again BB checks and button bets $70. I fold and the BB fold. was the folding the right play in this case with the top set? or how should i proceed with this hand?

IMO, it depends how much it would have broken you. It is possible he had the flush, or he could have been bluffing. I've been in the same spot as you except i hadn't paid attn. to the board , called and the villian did in fact have the flush. Since he didn't show, we'll never know but i think it was a good play. Most books will tell you to raise or push. I disagree, if in fact he did have the flush and didn't buy that you had the higher one..you'd be out of more money.

Limping?? Uh no - now you go to the flop with no real idea of what you are facing. You should not have checked the flop, especially if you knew you would be calling. Bet out and if you get raised that gives you a better sense of where you are than just checking and flatting a big bet. $35 on the checked flop just smells like "you all are afraid of the flush so I'm going to rep it" Folding the turn does not make sense to me as the card did nothing to put you in a worse position as the flop bet that you called - understand? So why bail out now? I think you got ran out by an aggressive button playing position, but with no read on an opponent sometimes you just let them - just not usually with a set. As he was the PF raiser I have a harder time putting him on that flush than figuring him for an overpair or just two big cards (AK, AQ), so I'm going to challenge him with a nice set and 10 outs to a flush buster.

I had to log in to say thanks for this post haha. I've been wondering if I've been playing that exact tactic right... raise the pot to see if the PFR on will re-raise with a high straight/flush draw on the board. I've folded 3 sets because that's happened this week. I don't have the hand histories, otherwise I'd post em. I've also won a single giant pot...(giant for me ~$50) calling the PFR's bluff on the draw, and just letting him call right untill the turn: ...pot $15 on turn, check, button bets $10, I re-raise to $20, button re-raise to $40, I call and win with rockets. Scary. but fun :)

re raise flop. ur playing this too passively and your not geting any information.

the way he played it is exactly the way alot of people that had a single Ad would have played it. hes drawing many times here.

cause if hes holding the Ad ,he knows you dont have it, so he can easily semi bluff the nuts.

I'd a pushed on the flop. That would have taken the chasers out.
