What's the point of playing play-money? Is it even helpful to practice with it? It seems that people treat play money with no respect, therefore would be reckless with it. Will playing free money improve my cash game plays at all?

At best I think play money might help you beat the hugest of fish but there are not that many of those. The one thing I learned from play chips is to think past level 0. That is to not just play your own hand. You have to consider the other players hands. I guess I could have learned this by just reading poker training material but play chips worked for me.

Over all I see play chips as way to play some poker just purely for fun. I know some of the grinders on here might think that is a waste of time but I think it is fun every once and a while and it is zero risk (Assuming you don’t buy any play chips. Most hilarious idea ever.) I have gotten some serious laughs out play chip play so there is that as well.

It is up to you to decide if that time could be spent better doing something else.

i guess it does teach you to play "past level 0". but ever since switching to real money i just found it pointless and so much different.

i wonder how much they earn from selling play money? LOL

Even in my opinion microstakes also pointless. The only pure game left is HIGH STAKES POKER NO LIMIT HOLDEM! -Doyle Brunson
If u are drunk and wanna have some fun, play micro stakes. Don't try to make money out of it. Worthless.

It should only be played when you're unfamiliar with the rules, you're only going to see improvement if you play with real cash, play money just isn't like real poker.

Play money is not real poker.

I think people play it because theyre just newbie and/or not familiar with the layout.

Agree with all of the above.
It will probably make your actual game worse.
The most insane thing about play money is that poker stars sells play money for real money. $2million chips for $9.99 and the crazier thing is people actually buy them even though they won't buy them back.
I guess that is the only way that most of us will ever have over$1million in our poker account. :)

The playmoney fifty-fifty SNG's on pokerstars are a fun way to waste your time when playing mobile but other than that, play money is NOT poker......

I tend to agree with above, Play money will hurt your game as people don't play the way they will if there $$ is on it. good luck to you on the tables!!

i got hooked in poker using facebook which is similar to play money. I agree that it will get you past level 0. You should read a book or play at the lowest limit with minimum table to learn the strategy and rationale behind poker. I would suggest to play live poker since most of your opponent there will comment on your moves or what is your mistakes.

People - you all are talkin' about low value of chips - 1k-250k. When Chip sizes are getting larger - to 500k, 1M+ then starts the real game, same that going in real money games and I'm not talking about micro real money ring games with 0.01/0.02 blinds...
But in case of playing with 1k chips - thats nonsense.

Playing poker with playmoney is nothing like real poker unles it is a homegame with Cardschat.

I only use playmoney to practice HU. Giving a little experience with odds calculation.

Forced to play with play money for a couple weeks. How do I get the most out of it?

Yes I know with play money it's a different game blah blah blah. It's out of my control. I know the basics of the game and I usually play 4NL or MMT. I want to get better but don't know how to approach play money games with the intent of getting better. Any help to maximize these coming weeks with play money would be greatly appreciated.

Play in HomeGame groups with solid players, who play to win, where you will get the closest thing possible to real poker

You really can not get better playing play money games so play for the fun of it or don't play.

We do have some games that would be good to play in here:

Cardschat Fall Frenzy!

Some of the online training at Pokerschool online is shown on the play money homegames. I have joined the PSO home game club thinking that I could use it to try various strategies without putting my BR at risk. One of the things about the homegame play money games there though is that the players take it more seriously than the normal play money games so you can actually get a good game there.
On the other side of the coin though, poker is a game where money is used to keep score which does render the idea of play money games pointless

Play money or freeroll is the best way to find your game.

Freeroll is good because there is a chance to actually win something that makes for some good play to be seen. Play money on the other hand is almost useless for me. Many players there suck terribly your game might even get worse.

Play money games are only good to learn the rules. Playing them to much will have bad long term effects on your play.

For me, I think it could work. I know that sometimes we don't take the game seriously because we are playing and will be winning or loosing fake at the first place. However I think it is the safest way to learn. Because sometimes if you go ahead and play with real money and you lose, you get disappointed and would give the game up.
