Hello, I have a question and I would like your opinion. Are you recommending that a novice player play play money or real money? Does playing money help you to evolve the game or is it just fun?

Novice players need to be sure at the beginning of play on virtual money. This will enable the well to remember first poker card combinations and a little game experience. Then maybe go to the very small table with buy-in $ 0.01-0.02. But the best play at the start of the freeroll and slightly raise the bankroll to move to the the cache.

I learned on pokerstars I played for a year with play money. It took years to unlearn the bad habits I picked up. I say play real, maybe micro.

I played the play money games on partypoker for what seemed like years!

There are definitely parallels between play money games and the no-fold 'em low stakes games people always complain are so hard to beat (they're not).

If you take it seriously and realize that you won't be getting many folds, you can use the play money games to build a good strategy before playing in similar cash games or tournaments.

Good luck at the tables! :D

Playing the play money tables to get used to the site, or if you are new to online poker, to get used to playing online is fine. You will not help yourself as a poker player playing for real money at the play tables because neither you or your opponents are putting anything at risk, you are just playing around.

The funny thing is that Doug has a good point. You could actually get a good free roll strategy developed by playing in play money games. Just about the same thing.

As far as cash games/cash tournaments, I think all you will learn is bad habits.

I think play money is entirely a waste of time unless you do not yet understand the fundamentals of the game. Things like positioning and what hands beat what.

The variance in play money is absolutely bonkers. People will open things like 93os, T4, K3, and many other banana hands. Sure you might have a suited ace or even a high pocket pair, but vs 4+ opponents you will only be a slight favorite.

Then it comes down to what you are playing for. Nothing. That is why I, as a new player as well, am slugging it out in the freeroll streets. Sure, I still run into a lot of nonsense but I am still playing for something. In the few deep runs I've made people play a little more how you'd expect.

I think tournaments are safer then cash games to start, but play money is rediculous. People just do really dumb things when there is 0 risk. Even a freeroll has "some" reward and so towards the end you can see proper play.

Only as some exercise in math, adjusting you shove rages... pretty much thats it. If you will it's a ICMizer with real people =)
Poker is a game of greed, if you don't care about loosing something - you do care of you lose (obv. I know.).
For every decent player who has a fold button you will have 7 who think that pulling 2-outer is good... and they might be right. if they win - they win, if they lose - they dont really lose

Players won't play the game realistically with fake money. It's a good way to learn the very basics of the game.

Some casino's offer "beginner tournaments" with low buy in, and a wider pay-spread than usual. I'd spend a couple days on forums/youtube/etc. Play some games with free money to understand the different concepts behind betting/hands/playing your position on the table. And then start into real money stuff.

Being you're here it's already a good start!

I think that the game play money leads to degradation of the player. It should start with freerolls and micro limits games

I started of playing with play money, gives you a certain feel for the game, i would recommend joining a league of some sorts, the play is more like real money.

If you are truly a beginner, then I don't think there's anything wrong with playing with play money for a very short time just to get used to the mechanics of the game - reading boards, figuring out pot sizes, etc. If you know how to play, micros is the way to go. Even at those levels, people take it seriously, particularly if they are getting the $$ by grinding freerolls and can't reload the bankroll easily. Good luck!

It depends on your opponents, when they don't care of losing, your win isn't worth much, buts n1 to learn the basics like which hand beats which.

Ofcourse it's fun playing with play money , but not only that . If somebody just started playing poker , it's good to familiarize himself with the basics of the game , to check how it is to play cash games and how to play a sng or a tournament , etc . To get to know with the values of the hands , the different rules of every poker game , to get used to online poker . Once they do these , they can try limit holdem to begin with , so they will make the less possible mistakes in contrast to if they started without some preparation before imo , and then they will learn the rest , like position , bluff , etc . :)

play money is just waste of time for me but you can learn and get skilled from there and can gain knowledge how people play and style of raise but risking you money to see flop turn and river is fun ;)

I would recommend playing freerolls instead of play money. As people have stated above, you can pick up some bad habits, but the same can be said about freerolls.

Just deposit and play for real.
