Hey everyone,

I keep reading that table selection is important for winning poker, and that you should find a spot where you're profitable. I, however, am trying to learn the game. I'm playing micro stakes and have enough non-poker related income to maintain plenty of bankroll for the games I'm playing.

I'm curious what people's thoughts are on this? I played a table last night where it was obvious I was the #3 player at the table (at best). I lost money. I did pick up a couple things from the table, and got to where I could time the big stack 3 betting from his BB to steal the position raise.

So ultimately my question is this: Do you believe there's value in "paying your dues?" Should I have walked away from this table?

In cash game table selection is the priority...if I do not have fish or donkeys at the table I NEVER play cash game because I know you are risking way more to lose than to win in cash game.

Paying your dues means losing horrendous amounts of money playing poker,or atleast trying to,when you should have been watching money. All fish who try to play, especially cash game, end up losing tons of money.Figure out the game first then play.Even micro's will set you back thousands of dollars as the math works out.

SNG , MTT there is no way to choose table. unless you choose game.

cash game , yes, I think it is very important than playing.
the ability to finding your ATM is way important than you sitting and playing.

PS: I never select tables at Mirco stack, unless NL50 or above , I am starting to considering select tables. there is still enough fish at NL25 or below.

avoid big sharks and swim with fish make you a wining player.

There are additional factors to just having a good table. You need to have a good seat at the table. For your example, if you are the third best player at the table (if I am understanding that correctly) but you have the 2 best players to your left, you may very well lose. They have position on you and can take advantage of that. You want to try to act after the better players to help minimize the information they have if possible.

Since you are asking about choosing your seat, I assume you are playing cash games. I usually open up several tables to observe before I sit down. I try to sit with the biggest stacks to act before me. I try to watch for a bit and I pay attention of who is on several tables and make notes that they are multi-tabling. When I do sit in, I usually wait until the next BB and watch to try see what types of players are at the table. Occasionally, I leave a table without playing.

Learn to prey on the HU tables before going for the 6-max or 9-max.Multi way pots are the least talked about topic in poker they are difficult. Look for minimum buy-ins,fish usernames, nowhere to be seen on leaderboards and just buy-in min. play 10 hands at you should easily tell if they are fish or donkey or both. If they are enjoy preying on them if not you must leave since cash games are negative ev without fish or donks.I can explain why but to lazy.
