Just reading some articles on caffeen and how it improves your memory retention and I was wondering if any of you believe there is a performance enhancing drug when it comes to poker or if theres something you like to take or do before you play?

I always like to be well fed and drinking water during the tournament, sometimes an energy to help with ice (Red Bull, Flying Horse). :) :) I do not like coffee...

Another idea would be to show up at live games with a firearm.

Coffee is overrated, cocaine is where it's at according to Tony Montana.
On the serious side, I don't believe you should be taking any man-made performance enhancing drugs just to play better poker, because no amount of drugs will give you the knowledge to play proper poker.

If you are awake and alert it will help your poker. If you are half asleep and/or drunk, it will hurt your poker. Conclusion: Coffee is good and legal. However, in a live game it may make you nervous and you may give off tells as a result. So, it depends, just like everything else in poker....

Adderall, Ritalin, Modafinil and a few others if you look deeper.

All of those are well regarded as performance enhancers for poker and taken by some high stakes players as well as people in academia.

Seriously, what are you on about? Please tell me which part of the post makes me a hypocrite (I presume that's what you were insinuating) in any way at all. It is completely correct.

This from someone who regularly berates & belittles others for idiotic posts.

They do help from what i've heard...... Buuuuut the side effects defeat the purpose of using any of them.

And he's english, he can't help it :p.

IMO, anything that affects your thinking can be hazardous to your poker playing, especially live. A stimulant can, effectively, put you on tilt. A depressant can dull you (and could make you sleepy.) For me, it's all about staying alert, continuing to think and make responsible decisions. (I am assuming here you know enough poker theory and have decent enough poker instincts to make such decisions.)
The most I will take is coffee, which usually does not make me particularly jumpy. Alternate coffee with water. Music can help filter out inconsequential stuff also. If I am playing a ring game, I take breaks and stop when I become tired or grumpy. A short, swift walk around the casino can help more than any drug. Do remember that any young pros who may say this is a good idea may be bluffing you out -- because I am fairly certain they keep a stable and patient edge at a table in order to not go busto.

Ok, I get the energy drink and the hydrating. Purpose for the ibuprofen?

>Reduces the pain of the beats<.

Personally I take / use the same stuff I always do on a lazy evenening.

I only drank once in a realmoney game and the result was mixed....

Won a few $ but didn't know how (was playing my first PLO cash game and I really sucked tremendously, lol).

If I get really tired and can't concentrate anymore I sometimes take Wick-Daymed (ephydrine, paracetamol) plus drink coffe, coke and Red Bull.

I'm a fat old man - I hurt sitting there for hours on end. I have degenerative spine and a little touch of arthritis. Not to mention the swelled head.

Seriously - it makes a huge difference - nagging pain or discomfort can be very distracting.

If Poker is about aggression wouldn't it be wise to take soothing that is likely to make you more aggressive? Anything that would kep you alert is gonna be + I would think.

OK, then just get married.

You "take" the vow "till death do us part"

That can make you aggressive.....

That makes sense. I have fairly bad arthritis myself and it does get uncomfortable after awhile. I may have to give this a try. Doesn't help that I'm 6'6" and, trust me, poker tables are NOT designed with tall people in mind. Pretty uncomfortable after 3-4 hours.

Didn't you mean "depressive"? :(

Adrenalin it is then that should do the trick. Have not tried it myself and quiet frankly don't think it would end well.Someone is stealing my blind i have 7,2 offsuit the adrenalin respose i am not going to let you push me around all in. However in all seriousness when i play i always like to be kept well fed and make sure i have plenty to drink. During long grind sessions I normally drink coke and eat something greasy like takeaway fried chicken, hamburgers, or pizza... It's unhealthy but who gives a **** it does the job and i play better with it than without it. I say it is essential... Try playing poker with an empty stomach, and and while your tired and not alert tell me how you did.
