How do i go about finding the percentage of the pot? etc

(Call amount / Pot amount after your call) X 100

On the flop your opponent bets $2 into a $4 pot, you need to call $2 after which the pot will be £8.

(2 / 8) X 100 = 25%

If you are drawing you need greater than 25% chance of the turn card making your hand to correctly call. With a flush draw you have an ~18% chance of making your hand on the turn, so, in this simplified example, calling to draw for a flush is in fact incorrect.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

Yeah, I find it easier to think in terms of percentages than odds.

I believe you are right in the way you are calculating the odds. However (and i know you realize this micro), that you also have to take into consideration what you are expecting to make on later streets if you do hit the flush (implied odds)- as this can make calling very profitable even if the immediate pot odds are unfavorable. Hope that makes sense.

Yeah that's right, I almost mentioned implied odds in my first answer :)

Some hands will carry better implied odds than others, flush draws aren't great because a third suited card often shuts down the action. Something like 10-8 with a 7-A-9 flop will have better implied odds because your hand is disguised.

I checked and the way I worked it out above is right. That example nicely shows how a 1/2 pot bet can be enough to make draws incorrectly call.

The thought of learning impiled odds aswell puts me off learning the maths!

Is is possble to just use the odds and outs without impiled odds? for time being or is it essential?

You don't need to learn a lot of (or any) maths to get a basic grasp of implied odds. You need to be thinking about it imo.

Simplify it a lot a first. If there is a possibility to win a larger pot later in the hand (there are still streets to come + you and your opponent will still have $ in your stacks) then slightly incorrect calls according to pot odds are likely to be profitable.

Implied odds will be greater with certain hands (as mentioned above) and against certain opponents, especially more aggressive ones and fishies who overvalue hands.

The thing is you will find yourself in the same spot over and over again so you will learn quite quickly whether you are getting the correct odds or not at a glance.

For instance with only two players in the pot, any bet above half the pot size is giving you incorrect odds (unless you are on a straight flush draw with KQ over pairs).

You don't need to be able to figure out the exact odds because usually it's a simple yes or no. Most players use standard bets when playing online e.g. half pot / three quarters / pot / all-in because they have set up buttons to do this.

I am sticking to the Rule Of 2 here, the rule of 4 only applies if you are calling an all-in bet or you know you will not be raised after the turn.

interesting...I guess I always feel like most players at the micro levels overvalue their hand and you can usually let them bet into you again if you hit the flush on the turn. But you are definitely right the more your hand is disguised the more money you should make in the hand and it definitely is relative to the opponent.
